Did Case make all Clauss knives?

Post by 58chevy348 »

Just got this Clauss multi-tool in. I have heard that Case actually made Clauss knives, but did they make ALL Clauss knives? Thanks!

That looks to be one made by Utica;I don't recall Case ever making a tool kit knife.

I have seen Clauss pocket knives made by Case, Queen City, Camillus, and Robeson. Possibly others. As Kife7Knut says, Case never made a tool kit knife. So possibly Utica, maybe if its older, Napanoch.

Clauss contracted with several companies to make knives. Case did make a lot of them, and if you're familiar with Case patterns, jigging, and so forth you can usually readily spot those made by Case. Same with other brands. Those I have seen that were made by Case, if you just changed the shield and the tang stamp they are identical to the corresponding Case patterns. I believe Robeson, Schatt & Morgan, Queen, Utica, Camillus and probably others made knives for Clauss at various times.

Edit - looks like Steve beat me to it! FYI here's a link to an old thread with several Case-made Clauss knives discussed. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=44307&hilit=Clauss

Awesome! Thanks for the information! I knew I had never seen a Case multi-tool, and your information confirms why.

Nice old Clauss knife there, 58chevy348.
I've got one just like it, but I don't have the kit.
I use mine as my bench knife. I love the covers. It's one of my favorite knives.
That would be great if Utica made it.

That looks like a Robeson 253 pattern to me, to include the lined bolsters.

The bone looks "Robesonish" to me as well.

I do not have a bone handled version, but here's one in pearl.

And a similar, but differently numbered five blade.

I'll throw in a couple more, posted previously on other threads. One from the scout/camp knife pile and one from the whittler pile. Pretty sure both were made by Case.

Thanks Joe.

Charlie, I got that Clauss whittler from eBay last week. That's it in the picture. I was surprised I won it - thought someone would bid higher. Makes me wonder if there's something wrong with it. ::paranoid::

Nice whittler! That one was made by Queen not by Case.

For what it is worth, my sales indicate eBay prices are really depressed right now. I have a record number of non-payments.
That might explain your recent win.

Ken, the whittler was not the knife I was referencing. It was a bone handled two blade regular jack that sold via a best offer being accepted.

Here is my one Clauss knife, an old sheepsfoot Barlow with a pre-existing repair that I have since sanded down and begun color-matching potential dyes to blend. These are the "before" pictures; the edges on the blades have since been sharpened into (near) perfection and the knife has made a wonderful carry even with the eyesore repair. I believe it might be an Ulster build, though I do not own any contemporary examples to compare...

I am at a loss as to who made this knife. Very lightly stamped 'CLAUSS". Beaded bolster, not particularly well done. 3 3/4".
It sure is a nice knife. Looks German. Any thoughts .........
One of the nice things about this pattern; you get a lot of main blade with it.

Thanks for looking.

I have one that is striking similar to yours except for the length.Mine is 4 1/2" closed. Stamped Edward K.Tryon Philadelphia.I don't think Tryon made their own knives either.
