Case XX pattern 66 ???

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case XX pattern 66 ???

Post by robert6715 »

Greetings, just picked up this centennial knife & trying to figure out what model it is. Appears to be a pattern 66 which I have never heard of.
Thanks in advance.

It's apparently a knife that Case made a pattern number change on, hence the "0" before the "66". Originally, the 66 pattern was a small stockman 3 1/16" closed. I think that they discontinued that pattern in the Tested era. If you can get a copy of Steve Pfeiffer's book on collecting Case knives, he goes into Case's rationale on pattern numbers, however, briefly, when Case used a discontinued pattern number they added the "0" in front of the pattern number to indicate the fact.

Maybe he'll (Knifeaholic) be along to elaborate further, however, I think that that's the gist of it.

To add to what msteele said. There are lots of Case pattern numbers that make no sense when compared to each other. I mention in my book that sometimes the zero in a pattern number means a minor variation on another pattern, but as often as not it means a completely different pattern.

I had forgotten that Case made that 066 pattern for a few years. If I remember correctly, the original 066 on that frame is a switchblade made in the 1920's era. Case brought it back in 1989 as a non-switchblade but using a similar frame.

The 6366 was a small stockman, made in the Tested era.

Thanks for the info. I bought the knife at a pawn shop for $55.00 & thought it was a bargain. When I got home & started digging I was having a heck of a time trying to figure out what exactly it was. The closest thing it looked like was a copperlock but not a lock back & much bigger at 5 1/2" closed, 10" open & quite thin at a little over a 1/4" thick.

Thanks again
Rob
