Boys, my ol' Husqvarna with the welded deck beats them little fellers all to pieces along with most of the dead wood that comes from the oaks and pines around the camp. Beatin' all that mess up helps as a soil builder.
Once in a while when I hit one of the unopened green pine cones from the big long leaf pines I realize maybe I should have picked that one up

I'm with tree farmer the ole bad boy chews'em up and spits them out along with the black walnuts, the walnuts make more racket. The worse thing I've found about magnolias is they drop leaves year around. Some good eating around here this evening.

I love Magnolias, but the mess they make on the ground and the fact that one can hardly get grass to grow under them has kept me from planting any.
I'm surprised no one has come up with a hybrid that doesn't produce cones.

I'm with you on that Charlie. My wife has wanted a magnolia for years but so far I've managed to avoid planting one for exactly the reasons you've stated. Of course, we've got 50 ft tall oaks that grass won't grow under, and they drop acorns and leaves all over the place every fall!RobesonsRme.com wrote:I love Magnolias, but the mess they make on the ground and the fact that one can hardly get grass to grow under them has kept me from planting any.

The ones that grow up here don't make that seed pod. I have five of them around the yard they flower in the spring and late summer. I believe the variety is Magnolia liliflora, it is more a shrub than a tree.RobesonsRme.com wrote:I love Magnolias, but the mess they make on the ground and the fact that one can hardly get grass to grow under them has kept me from planting any.

Dimitri I have a similar shrub type tree in my yard that is blooming right now. It has small magnolia like leaves, not near as big as the one the pods cone from.

The tree Dimitri showed is what we call "Tulip Trees" down here.
I had no idea they were related to Magnolias, which are evergreens. Tulip trees are not.
Mine looks like Dimitri's and is in bloom.

Here's another unusual tree in my yard that's got these blooms on the very end of its long slender limbs. I don't know what kind of tree it is.

Tommy I don't have a clue. It is a fairly large deciduous tree. Looks very odd with no leaves and and these blooms on the ends of the branches.

Greg, pretty sure that's a deciduous magnolia. There are dozens of different varieties ranging from 3 or 4 ft tall shrubs up to tall trees, with differing colors of flowers. They are beautiful plants. Google "deciduous magnolia". From the pictures and descriptions you can probably get a good idea which variety you have.

Well Ken that's what threw me off because this one is about 30 feet tall and looks nothing like the traditional white flowering magnolia in the front yard.Mumbleypeg wrote:Greg, pretty sure that's a deciduous magnolia. Greg,
We've got one of those trees, it has already bloomed without leaves. My wife said its' common name is Japanese Magnolia. We saw a lot of them blooming when we went up your way a few weeks ago.

I thought I'd stick this here for the heck of it. I'm probably going to spend over 50 bucks at the post office tomorrow
I can only imagine how time consuming it is for big time knife sellers to package and ship everything, kudos to them!

Re: Pictures of Miscellaneous Stuff & Things
Does anyone know what kind of bird this is? Our dog Molly found it injured two years ago (bad wing) and it's been living in our Dining room ever since. It doesn't care for bird seed but loves leafy greens like lettuce. I assume it's some kind of sparrow. It showed up late in the fall in Minnesota but I don't see them around here enough to know what it is. It is about 6 inches long and I assume it's a female.___Dave

You can have them, but since one of those packages is my ticket to a nice pocketeze I'll need a good replacement one.RobesonsRme.com wrote:If you want to save money, I'll just come pick those up.
