Garry, what I know about birds I can't remember and what I used to know, I've forgotten. What is it?

I met a lady in a parking lot to buy this. I bought it because it was listed as new and had interesting hands. The lady was long gone when I found out the analog part didn't work.
And then I destroyed it trying to find out why. What's left is perhaps the most accurate digital I've ever seen. And hard as heck to read.

I reckon I'll chalk this up to only buy cheap watches at Walmart or Target where I can verify they work.
Your watch kind of reminds me of my 38 Dave. ::nod::

jerry: That is a white throated sparrow. Very common around here. I think he looks fat because he has puffed out his feather to hold body heat.

OF: Its perched in a tree in the back yard. Very hard getting a photo. They won't hold still. Here is a group on the front porch, mostly House Finches and Engish sparrows.

Well bighomer,if it is any consolation, your big barn looks much better than my old barn. And its a lot bigger so of course the kestral looks small.

A friend of mine traps on my farm and several others around me.He caught this bobcat in a set recently and in Ohio you have to release them as there is no season bobcats. That is not the safest thing to do has the bobcat is not in the best of moods. He has probably had to release 8 or 10 over the many years of trapping.
This one wanted to stick around after he got loose and jumped into the engine compartment of his side by side.It took longer to get it out of it than it did the trap.

I'll take this guy hanging out on my clothesline over an irate bobcat occupying my truck any day. ::paranoid::

The spider was easy enough to relocate to a more convenient location with a broom handle; but, I'm curious as to just how you release an irate bobcat from a trap without getting yourself shredded? ::hmm::

Bumper crop of acorns this year! These all came from 3 trees in my yard - 2 red oaks and a burr oak. Had another nearly full bucket load of the small ones. The tractor bucket is 6 ft wide. ::woot::

When we get a cold snap around here, the water seeping out from the rock ledges freezes forming little frozen waterfalls that sometimes last for weeks. It's warm here now so these won't last too much longer.

Gathering them up isn't that difficult. I use a leaf blower and rake to get them into piles, then shovel them into the loader bucket. I dump them into one of the creeks that cross my place. Mother Nature will wash them downstream and plant them somewhere, Lord willing. It's an annual ritual but this year's crop was extraordinary. Some of those I miss picking up (I probably only get 90-95% of them) germinate and eventually die from being continually cut off by the lawn mower.

Before my wife retired from teaching 1st grade, every year she took some of those big burr oak acorns to school. Each child in her class planted one in a coffee can or solo cup, watched them sprout and grow. She always planted some extra so those that didn't germinate would still get a tree. Most kids took them home but a few are planted in the school yard. ::tu::

Hmmm. Leaf blower, eh? Somehow I pictured the task as being more arduous. As usual the simple solution isn't always the most obvious to me. Ever wonder if there's a mighty oak growing somewhere that started life as an acorn in your yard.

I have a Stihl blower - it's a good one, at full throttle it's a very strong blower. ::tu:: ::tu:: I'm sold on Stihl - only way to go for blowers, trimmers, chain saws, edgers, etc. I got fed up with all those brands sold at the big box stores several years ago. Switched to Stihl and no regrets - their stuff is built to last, easy to start, run great.

Larry,
One good thing in addition to the new garden spot is you wont have as much grass to mow ::tu:: . The old timers around here used to say, 'taters had to be planted on February 14th for some reason. I asked one ol' feller, "What if the 14th is on Sunday?" He said "A day one way or the other is okay when that happens." :)
We could never grow English peas for the rabbits eatin' 'em up, I guess since they would be some of the 1st new green vegetation showing up, Thumper zeroed in on 'em. I found out it's impossible to kill all the rabbits .
Seeing your pictures make me want to go burn some diesel, it wont be long, lots of corn planted during February around here.

Mr. Phil, We had to change the garden spot this year because of the deer population has grown. Our daughter lives across the road and has 4 acres to mow. We still have to build a fence around it. We have five of our seven grandchildren that live close by. I want to teach them the importance of work and the rewards from it. We could buy our vegetables cheaper from the farmers market, but growing your own taste better.

Larry,
I know what you're talkin' about, teaching the young ones about work and who knows, they may have to rely on some the things they learn in the garden to survive in the future ::shrug:: . Our children were all involved in the work around the place till they all went to college. A garden and a cow pasture can provide some pretty good lessons about life for both young and old.
We had a problem with the deer and the pea patch several years ago and a man told me about a sure fire way to keep the deer out of the garden. The is a product called Milorganite, a low analysis fertilizer made from the waste water treatment plant in Milwaukee. Broadcast it around the patch with a spreader and the deer will not cross into the garden. We have used it several times and it actually works. The product has an odor that the deer don't like apparently. Home Depot, Lowes and several seed and feed stores sell the stuff in our area.
I would love to see the progress on your new garden spot from time to time.
