Help ID fixed blade Case?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Help ID fixed blade Case?

Post by diamondjim »

I just picked this one up, I don't recognize this stamp.
I did search all the forums and no info available for this style.
The sheath looks original to the knife.
Any help would be appreciated.

I believe it was originally a 309 (hollow leather washer handle) or 709 (hollow metal handle) hunting knife that has been re-handled. The original handle most likely broke and the knife has been re-handled to keep it serviceable. I think these model knives were discontinued shortly after 1940. The sheath is not original and looks custom made.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

I suspected that this was a re-handled knife, profile is pretty worn and letters are lightly stamped or worn.
What I didn't know was if this style letter font was actually used by Case.
I searched but I didn't find anything on-line and I don't have the reference books for a detailed search.
Overall it is a nice little knife and sheath combination, very primitive looking.
Thanks for your help.
