Being "tested" on (3) Cases

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Being "tested" on (3) Cases

Post by bedogged »

First time out in knife land and need some help please. I have (3) stag handle case fixed blade knives that have me stumped. The first is a 1989 316-5 w/tested on the blade. Second is a 1988 2-finn. Third is a 1965-69 3-finn w/tested on the blade. The only thing that comes to mind is they may have come out of a set at one time. I have spent some time searching the net and the different knife catalogs including S.Pheiffer's 1st. and 2nd. editions and J. Sargents knives and razors. I'm trying to find general information such as current day value or anything that would give me their history. Thanks for any suggestions you may have. "Bedogged" (Re: pic's) They are in groups of (3) from the top. The first (3) is the 316-5, second group is the 2-finn, and the third group is the 3-finn.

Welcome to AAPK, bedogged, and nice looking knives! I bet we have some members here that can help you, but frankly after reading your post a couple times, I'm not sure what your question is. Specifically what do you want to know?

Thanks Ken for asking the question "what is your question". After reading my maiden post I was scratching my head as to what I wanted to know. I added some more info. to the post that should clarify what I'm asking for. Thanks again for your time. Not very knowledgeable about fixed blades knives, however, I am in possession of Sargent's guide to Knives and Razors which has an extensive section on Case fixed blade knives. From a perusal of that material and by inspection it appears that all of the knives have been re-handled. This would have a detrimental effect on their value to most collectors.

As I said I'm not really knowledgeable about fixed blade knives (and many would say not very knowledgeable about ANYTHING) and hopefully someone with more sure knowledge will check in, however, it doesn't look good.

Sorry for the bad news, however, it's just my opinion.

Those are definitely Case kniives handled by Case , I have seen them in two knife sets with the double sheath.I don't know the reason why they made them with full horn handles but it was a departure from the regular handles. 88-89 seem to be the only years they made the stag fixed blades that way.

Just a tidbit of info that may help find more about these . The 1st knife is a 1981 stainless , the 2nd knife is a 1982 carbon steel , and the 3rd knife is a 1978 carbon steel knife .

I learned something new. I wouldn't have dated the 3rd knife in the 70's.

Based on the pattern numbers on the blades and on the appearance of the handles, all three have been rehandled post-factory. "3" designates a stacked leather washer handle. "2" designates a black composition handle. Original Case blades with home made stag handles.

To all,
Thanks to everyone one of you for your input. It is greatly appreciated. Robinent.. How I i.d. the wrong manufacture dates on a case knife which I've been handling and collecting for years is a little embarrassing, but it will probably happen again. Thanks again "Bedogged"
