I went with my Buddy yesterday to Shelbyville Indiana to buy a combine and in the process got an education on antique tractors.The most impressive was a 1913 Rumely Oil pull.After we all went out for lunch we came back and they fired that bad boy up.

Roger, those are some great old tractors! Is that someone's private collection?

If you're ever near Union City, TN, the Discovery Park of America there has a great collection of tractors and farm equipment. Also a lot of other stuff as well, including a great antique car collection. It's worth a day there to see it all. Here's a few pictures. They also have a Rumley Oil Pull tractor on display, among many others.

Yes Ken most were a private collection.The guy also does restoration work for others.He also.has a business of supplying replacement parts for vintage tractors.They ship parts all over the world.I asked him what he considered a tractor to be antique,his answer was pre 1960.He has restored several JD 4020s though.I only took photos of a small amount of his collection.
I asked what the big Rumely was worth and he said 1 sold at auction a few years ago and it brought $215000 +10% buyers premium.

ESPN - It is "Boy Scouts of America" which was officially chartered in 1910 but Phil's reference is to the first known Boy Scout Troop founded before the actual founding of American Scouting which was based on the Scouting movement in the British Empire. Other Troops that started before the official founding include:

- Bala One from Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania in 1908
- Boy Scout Troop #1 of Barre, Vermont in 1909
- Boy Scout Troop from Pawhuska, Oklahoma in 1909

Those were real believers and pioneers!

........that brings back memories, phil!!!....used to be one of these at the entrance to the Saltillo fishing club where I had a cabin years ago!!.....if it doesn't rain here soon, they may wish they had not gotten rid of these!!............ ............

There is a fire tower still standing at "Love's Lookout", on a ridge near Jacksonville in East Texas. To my knowledge the tower is not in active use today but it's still there. I understand they use airplanes for fire surveillance today.

The tower itself is not open to the public so I've never been in it, but it's said that you can see for 35 miles while standing on the ground at the nearby public park.

Nice pictures Ken. I climbed one of those many, many years ago. Don't think I'll be doing that again. The one I climbed is long gone. I remember seeing something on TV way back where some enterprising folks were renting out fire towers for people to stay in overnight. It takes all kinds I guess.

If I remember correctly, that flag orientation is correct. The star field always leads. Imagine it being on a flag pole and you are moving forward. So, the one in this photo is a RIGHT shoulder flag patch. The one on the left shoulder would be as you thought... both star fields leading forward.

Correct Dave.

Explanation : "The blue field of stars should always be in the highest position of honor. When viewing the flag on a wall, the highest position of honor is the upper left when displayed horizontally, and at the top (upper left) when displayed vertically. When displayed on a "moving object" like a person or vehicle, the highest position of honor is the front, and not the rear; so the field of blue should be displayed to the front."

Edit: BTW, the flag on that soldier's uniform is not Photoshoped, just the stuff below it.

When I was a boy, we used to walk about five miles to climb to the top of Ruffner Mountain so we could ascend the fire tower, look at the panoramic view and talk with the Forrest Ranger there.

I recall a round map in the center of the space with a range-finding elevation sight that was used to pinpoint smoke spots.

That tower is still there, I live less than a mile below and the entire of Ruffner Mountain is a City park and preserve.

Cannot climb the tower, it is fenced off, but those wooden steps have long since rotted.

Wondering if that lacquered round map is still up there, though.
