6235 XX spear/punch?? Help please

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

6235 XX spear/punch?? Help please

Post by XxTestedxX »

I have an option to buy this 6235, it has the spear and punch, only found record of this knife with a clip blade.

Any insight from our more seasoned collectors. Maybe mr. Knifaholic can chime in ;)

I have never seen (until now) or heard of a 35 pattern with a punch blade and would seriously doubt any such knife. The punch blade looks to be Case. The close up of the pivot pin on the pile side looks suspiciously out of round. I would also be suspicious if the knife is priced high as a rare collectible. I don't see anything wrong with the stamp.

The 6235 1/2 with a punch blade would be considered rare.

Maybe Steve will have some insight.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Noticed a reference to a 6235 Rough Black with a spear master but no indication of secondary blade type, Vol.9 Pocket Knife Trader's Price Guide.

Yes as has been said, Case made the 6235 1/2 with a clip master and punch blade. Those are rare, the examples that I have seen have been XX and Tested, master clip and punch...but the punch is of a different design - it is the "flat" punch not the "wraparound" punch, at least on the examples that I have seen. IIRC the punch on the real one is in front.

As to the posted knife, the basic frame and spear blade look genuine to me. I would have to have the knife in hand to make a better evaluation but I think its a cobbled knife. If that is true though, the original knife would have had the pen blade in back and the spear in front, so the knife mechanic would have had to swap the position of the backsprings too. But that can be done.

For some reason I have a vague memory of having seen the posted knife before - either on Ebay or on these forums.

I didn't find this one on eBay, but I could have very well been at one time.

The seller has mentioned the odd nature of the knife, suggested a possible "lunch box situation"

Will different photos help? Let me know and I'll get more from seller

The spear blade should have a squared off tang - half stop. Does the punch have the same tang?

I'm certainly not an expert but , IMHO, this knife has been taken apart and worked, and reassembled.
1st) Look at the set down between the back springs where the center liner is. I've seen a lot of Case knives and none of them have this poor of alignment quality without being disassembled, first.
2nd) The punch blade and the main blade are not together. The back joint of the punch is a different style than the main, rounded not square. 3rd) The 1st series of pics shows the blades together but the Spear and Punch are clearly not the same series of steels, different light reflection and sheen.

IMHO, Always
