A collector or an accumulator

Post by justold52 »

I was trying to find out if I am a collector or just an accumulator (yet) ?

At what time do you feel you are a collector ?

What are the steps I need to take to become a knife collector ? (12 steps ?)

I just buy any knife that moves me to get her if I have the money.

I see so many super beauty's here I want them all... ::drool:: ::nod::

Some days when I see jfarmers knives all I can do is ::drool::

The same thing goes for Sunburst, Hukk, Roger, Johnroten,(o poop I can not name every one.).. ::drool::

Let me know how to become a knife collector.

A collector is a person whose hobby is collecting objects for their interest, value, or beauty.

Hello Ken I hope your doing well :) I personally believe that you are a true collector of fine looking bladed jewels.. ::nod:: :)

A good question.I used to tell people I collected knives but lately I have come to feel that I am an accumulator. My friend Bob used to be a knife dealer/collector in that he bought knives he liked but also ones that he knew other people would buy from him.I buy knives to keep with no thought of selling them.

Some of the symptoms are:

When you go shopping with your wife, the first place you head to in the store is the sporting goods department.

You navigate around town by the antique shops you know have knives in them.

You find it nearly impossible to drive by a flea market or yard sale without stopping.

The first place you go to on your computer is the "vintage knife" section of e-Bay.

Of the seven favorite spots you can book mark on e-Bay,all are knife related.

You find yourself fondling the knife in your pants pocket as you walk around.

If you exhibit even some of these symptoms, then I would wager that you are a certifiable knife nut and there is no cure.

Hello all - hope everyone hade a decent Thanksgiving!

My 2 cents....... A collector is someone who seeks out and obtains specific items of a particular intrest to add to a 'collection' of similiar items. He may or may not be an expert, but will have knowledge about these items and be aware of their value and history.

An accumulator is one who simply obtains and keeps anything they find intresting. The accumulator goes to a flea market and is just as likely to walk out of there with old door knobs and antique bottles as they are pocket knives.

I'm not sure it really matters how you define yourself as long as you enjoy your hobby! I bet most of us are actually collectors and accumulators - I am for sure.

I have collected several differing things over the years but none have given me the pleasure and satisfaction that a good pocketknife has. Thanks to this site my collecting has become more focused in recent years. Mainly in unusual celluloids in Schatts and Bulldogs, Fight'n Roosters, to the newer GECs only because it was my first opportunity to purchase new, a line of first run knives. I am no super collector but I have a passion for knives and a curiosity about the company's history and why things changed whether for good or bad.

TM to me your reasons and logic make me under stand more.

I think I have it when I say "collector's also accumulate as most of use here at AAPK do."

I am sure we all have some door knobs...

I even have an old cranking type key maker...thanks to Bills DAD.

It's so hard to pass up a sweet heart when you see her. Do you know what I mean ?...

Now all I need is a hot RED HEAD that buys this new COLLECTOR and ACCUMULATER a B-DAY knife. Which is NOV 29th...

P.S. all you others helped me too thanks for taken time to help me. ::tu::

Well I had some preconceived notions regarding this topic,
but before jumping in I decided I better check that ask Jeeves website.
Glad I did too, a real eye opener.
Now according to Jeeves, a Collector is a person that gathers together similar objects by applying their cumulative interest, knowledge and expertise about such objects in a constructive and educational manner for hoarding or exhibition.

An accumulator (according to Jeeves) is about same as a pack rat except they accumulate with a new Lincoln Navigator instead of a 20-30 yr old Suburban, Bronco, or vinylwood sided station wagon.
Another accumulator was the first ever household cleaning device using high power suction to replace the common broom. The inventor went broke and sold the whole kit & kaboodle to a guy named Hoover. He changed the accumulator from kerosene to electric power and renamed it the vacuum cleaner and the rest is history.
Hope this helps. ::smirk::

For some reason in my small mind, I just keep hearing Woseyjales saying, "I RECKON SO" .
A dull knife is like an empty wallet, no need to carry it.
