Any other CASE canoe collectors out there?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

I always found the Case baby butterbean to be too small at 2-3/4" & the standard canoe too large for everyday carry at 3-5/8" ... I tend to prefer weekday knives around 3" to 3-1/4" long. I do like the swedge grind on the Case Canoes very much. I've actually been looking around eBay for a canoe for the last month or so - it's one of the few patterns that you very rarely see a deal on - the canoe's certainly do hold their value & obviously have a devoted following...

Well, each of us have our own preferences...........that's why there are so many knife patterns! ::tu:: I grew up carrying scouts and canoes in my pockets, trappers and lock backs on my belt. Now I have more knives of all shapes and sizes than you can shake a stick at. But the canoe has always been my favorite.

Here's the latest addition......

I got sent here from the general page.Gsmith told me sasquach may be able to answer my question. These canoes have different bolster designs, one is a 72 and one is a 76. The 72 is on the right. I was wondering what year Case changed the design. I see both designs on the net and in the collecting case knives book but no mention of a frame or bolster change. Its kinda like what they did to the 65 pattern knives, I think. Sorry about the bad pictures.
Thanks Kerry

Kerry, I'm not absolutely certain but I suspect that the bolster change probably occurred about 1974. That's when CASE first started etching the Indian and canoe on the master blade. That period seems to have been a time of changes. If I can pin it down any closer than that I'll get back to you.

Thanks for the interest and the pics! Ya got a couple of good lookin' ol' red bones there! ::tu:: ::clapping::

Sure are some nice Case canoes posted on this thread so far....love looking at them.

Although these aren't Case canoes...I just started collecting this pattern, so I'll show what I have recently acquired (with apologies to the OP). I'll be sure to post more canoes as I get them (as long as no one objects if they're not all Case XX).

Well Q, you have certainly made a fine start!!! ::tu:: Love that stag Mohawk!!

I collect canoes of all kinds but Case canoes more than others. If you go back to when I started this thread an work forward you'll see many examples from other cutlers. When I named the thread I wasn't trying to be Case specific even though it may sound that way.

Squach-man, you have an amazing canoe collection and some sweet stag. Love looking at them.

Here's my first Case Canoe...and it's a dandy. Wharncliffe master on a canoe? Wha??? Now that's not something you see every day, and certainly not on a Case! My apologies to all the die-hard Case canoe purists, but ever since taking an interest in the canoe pattern I've been wanting to see how it would look with a Wharncliffe master blade.

As a wharnie collector, I may be a bit biased; but, I gotta say, I think the Wharncliffe is a perfect fit on a canoe. What say ye?

Glad you like it Q, looks good on that handle.
Squach, loooooooovvvvve that bottom Ka-Bar with that kind of bolster, and the shape of that main spear is very cool. Great one.

Ivoryman,

I'm curious, did you replace the master blade with a Wharncliffe blade from another knife or did you re-grind the original master blade to make it a Wharncliffe?
