I totally missed the SC/scrimshaw angle. So I went back to Orvet's research and see 707, not 507 !
Now I'm really confused![]()

My humble apologies k.joe ....
I may try to look that up later; I am occupied for awhile today. My curiosity is aroused. However, I have very closely examined two of these sheaths and believe them to be elephant. I have never seen domestic leather with grain structure like that, aside from the 'wrinkle' pattern. In the two sheaths, the wrinkle pattern does not seem to repeat itself anywhere, as I would expect, if it was embossed. I expect someone more knowledgeable to sign in on the subject.kootenay joe wrote:Regarding the "elephant hide" sheaths. Calvin i am aware of the hunting trip story but in the BF Schrade forum the minutes of a meeting were posted in which the decision is to go with cow hide treated to look like elephant leather. I think this was the 'final word' after much heated debate.
I am no longer a BF member so cannot search that forum to find the post i am recalling. Maybe someone here who is also a BF'er could search that forum for "elephant".
Having said all this, sometimes my memory is wrong so a search there is needed.
thanks, kj
It was not so difficult to move such items around back in the 1970s. Times have changed.kootenay joe wrote:Hal, thanks for the BladeForums link. The discussion about the elephant hide sheaths came up a few times and the decision of real or imitation went back & forth. My recall (which can be faulty) is of minutes of a meeting being posted in which the elephant hide plan had to be dropped due to 'problems' and cow hide made to look like elephant hide would be substituted. "Codger" was involved in that discussion but he is rather unwell at present so cannot be asked about this.
There are strict laws banning the importation of animal parts that are not made into a final product.
i.e. difficult to import elephant leather but not difficult to import a sheath made of elephant leather.
I found this out trying to enter USA from Canada with some elk sheds that i was going to send to Bruce Bump. They were confiscated because i was not willing to make an application to import from some Federal department that entailed a fee and a wait of months with no guarantee of positive outcome. The border guard told me that most of these requests got denied.
