What is Your Latest Old Schrade?

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Is that an LB8 ?
If so they are not really rare. The early ones were marked LB7 even though they had the Staglon handles not the Propwood(sp ?) ones. I have a Staglon one marked LB7 with serial #3219 on the front bolster.
The blade profile of the knife you show has been altered likely because blade was tipped. The top clip should have a curve to it and the blade edge should have more belly towards the tip.

If you are referring to the 8OT and the 881, both are Delrin.

NOT an LB8 ... ... it is a Schrade + SC507. Click on the picture for a better look.
Check out Orvet's Uncle Henry information in the research section.
The SC507 is mentioned down in the footnotes .. ::tu::

Blade is marked SC507, but it is the same as an LB8, i.e. an LB7 with Staglon handles and this one has a shortened modified blade so it is not a particularly good collectible. The SC507 marked blade is usually seen in the scrimshaw knives. This could be an EOD, End of Days, knife, when whatever parts would fit together were assembled into knives.
Maybe a dedicated Schrade collector could post their opinion of this knife, instead of an amateur like myself ?

OR ME ::dang::

I totally missed the SC/scrimshaw angle. So I went back to Orvet's research and see 707, not 507 !
Now I'm really confused ::facepalm:: ::facepalm:: ::facepalm::

My humble apologies k.joe ....

No need for apologies. Part of the fun of Schrade knives is trying to figure out the odd ones that continually pop up.

Just rescued this Schrade Walden 171 UH....it was rusted up from neglect but never used

It has the Elephant Hide sheath in very good condition and the knife is serial # 000375

Uncle Harold did a clean up job on it and it looks way better now....unfortunately it is not MINT...but it is in Great Condition.

Serial number 375 ! WOW ! that is low.
I read once that Schrade (Albert actually) would keep the first 200 of serialized knives, so that #201 would be the lowest number in circulation. That might have been only for the LB7 ? not sure.
There as been a lot of debate about the "elephant hide" sheath. I am fairly sure that someone active in the BF Schrade forum found paper work stating that these sheaths are cow hide treated to look like elephant leather.

I believe I read somewhere that the elephant hide came from a hunting trip to Africa but they were only used for the Craftsman. I'm pretty sure I saw an old advertisement for the Craftsman mentioning the elephant hide... Hard to remember all the different things Schrade did.

Eric Albers 10-9-2012: “Dave Swinden confirmed that to me a while back as well (real elephant hide sheaths). One of the Baers had gotten a shipment of them and expected big sales, but they just didn't catch on.”

Eric Albers 10-10-2012: “I spoke with Dave today and it seems that both Albert and Henry took a trip to Africa about the time that there was a rather large overpopulation of elephants eating everything in sight, around 1970 or 71 ( maybe Norm Thompson accompanied them! ). There was a cull of about 20,000 or so animals with a resulting mountain of hides. The Baers purchased a number of them and had them tanned and possibly even cut, Dave recalls that they wanted to help the folks out over there economically so had some of the work done over there. Don't know how much they got but I do know that they used it on the 165's and the 171's.”

Hi Royal,
I am not sure where you were looking, but there were two 707UH I have in the Uncle Henry list.
The first was a introduced in 1984 until 1985 and made in very low numbers. I don't have a picture and have Larry Vickery to credit for the information.
The second 707UH was introduced about 1991 and has a is the Uncle Henry counterpart to the 106OT.
It was a single blade with a scissor in a 2-3/4" frame.

This picture of the later version of the 707UH was barrowed from Larry Vickery's web site: http://www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us/
707UH.jpg

The knife on ebay you posted with the SC507 tang stamp appears to me to SC507 scrimshaw that someone tried to put LB8 handles on. Notice the peened rocker pin and the poor job of sanding down the bolsters and the Staglon in attempt to get it to look like it came with the Staglon handles.

IMHO, it was put together by someone without a lot of experience.
Hope this helps...

Regarding the "elephant hide" sheaths. Calvin i am aware of the hunting trip story but in the BF Schrade forum the minutes of a meeting were posted in which the decision is to go with cow hide treated to look like elephant leather. I think this was the 'final word' after much heated debate.
I am no longer a BF member so cannot search that forum to find the post i am recalling. Maybe someone here who is also a BF'er could search that forum for "elephant".
Having said all this, sometimes my memory is wrong so a search there is needed.
thanks, kj

I may try to look that up later; I am occupied for awhile today. My curiosity is aroused. However, I have very closely examined two of these sheaths and believe them to be elephant. I have never seen domestic leather with grain structure like that, aside from the 'wrinkle' pattern. In the two sheaths, the wrinkle pattern does not seem to repeat itself anywhere, as I would expect, if it was embossed. I expect someone more knowledgeable to sign in on the subject.

Here is a link. This thread seems to lean in the direction of authentic elephant hide sheaths.

Hal, thanks for the BladeForums link. The discussion about the elephant hide sheaths came up a few times and the decision of real or imitation went back & forth. My recall (which can be faulty) is of minutes of a meeting being posted in which the elephant hide plan had to be dropped due to 'problems' and cow hide made to look like elephant hide would be substituted. "Codger" was involved in that discussion but he is rather unwell at present so cannot be asked about this.
There are strict laws banning the importation of animal parts that are not made into a final product.
i.e. difficult to import elephant leather but not difficult to import a sheath made of elephant leather.
I found this out trying to enter USA from Canada with some elk sheds that i was going to send to Bruce Bump. They were confiscated because i was not willing to make an application to import from some Federal department that entailed a fee and a wait of months with no guarantee of positive outcome. The border guard told me that most of these requests got denied.

It was not so difficult to move such items around back in the 1970s. Times have changed.

Calvin i never thought about 'the times they are a-changin'. 1970 was almost 50 years ago. Scary, i think of it as my recent past. In 1970 you could smoke on an airline flight and maybe even fondle your handgun as you puffed.
