Re: The Venerable Old Barlow
I can't believe this thread is not more active. I just "discovered" the beauty of the venerable old barlow and now I've gone nuts for barlow knives. Here's a beautiful Russell EO stag I just picked up for $55...unbelievable!

Beautiful Russell Q...love that stag!
Here's a 1979 Case I just got in today...Nothing spectacular, but a solid old Barlow anyway.

Re: The Venerable Old Barlow
I think one of the reasons I haven't paid much attention to barlow knives in the past is because I'm just not a big fan of the side-by-side blade configuration. But, ever since I discovered the single blade barlows, I am converted...I've seen the light, Hallelujah!
However, I still don't care much for the width and weight of the two-blade barlows...but as a functional EDC, it's hard to go wrong with a Barlow. I'm thinking of getting a two-blade version and then modifying the pen blade into a flat head screwdriver and adding a pocket clip. Does anyone have something like that or has anyone ever seen a factory-produced barlow like that, by any chance? If so, let me know...I'll make you a good trade offer.

Wow - another very interesting old thread for me to read in the next day or two. I really like it when something like this that I did not know existed is resurrected.

Re: The Venerable Old Barlow
QT, do an ebay search for Ric-Nor. They made barlow-sized electrician knives with a bail.
I think those were mostly sheepfoot main blades though. They are shell handled knives,
but the steel is decent. Worth a looksy .. .. ..

This is what Royal was talking about. ~Q~ you're a Wharncliffe, Sheepfoot kind of individual. That should just about check all your boxes.
This Utica Kutmaster may not win any beauty contests (unless they're held in a tavern at closing time) but the old girl is solid with blades that take a good edge and have lots of snap in them.

Cuz, I have one just like that, my only Barlow. It is most definitely a tank. Best, heaviest built barlow I've ever coon fingered.

Here's a few Case Barlows. I like the Forum Barlow with a Spear blade instead of a Pen blade.

Yep, that's the one. If memory serves, the bail is just pinched into holesjerryd6818 wrote:This is what Royal was talking about. ~Q~ you're a Wharncliffe, Sheepfoot kind of individual. That should just about check all your boxes.
on the shells, not actually pinned. They also made a full size "TL-59"
And I just remembered, Colonial made a barlow/electrician also, with a clip main blade
Either would be a good little EDC

Re: The Venerable Old Barlow
Hey, thanks for all the suggestions everyone.
I also happened upon this one while surfing theBay that really caught my eye: I like the blade configuration; it's almost exactly what I was thinking of. Although, at $135, it's a bit pricey for me at the moment.
"~Q~ you're a Wharncliffe, Sheepfoot kind of individual. That should just about check all your boxes."
Apparently you know me too well, JerryD...and you are correct: I really do prefer a wharncliffe or sheepfoot master blade.

Yup, that's the one I want right there. If anyone has one that they'd be willing to trade for, I'd be willing to work out a good swap (At the moment, I have more knives than cash...so, trading is my only option.)jerryd6818 wrote:This is what Royal was talking about. ~Q~ you're a Wharncliffe, Sheepfoot kind of individual. Re: The Venerable Old Barlow
Well, actually, I just got myself a Ric-Nor Electric Mate with the sheepfoot (like the one JerryD posted).
But, I'm always looking for more wharnies if you have any you'd like to trade. Here's what I've currently got on my swappin' table:

Stephen Oates & Son, it is a little rough around the edges, but it fits the old part of the post title.

Re: The Venerable Old Barlow
Barlow's are one of my favorite patterns, I'm always trying to add nice examples to the collection but the competition for nice ones is stiff and a lot have slipped thru my fingers.
Here are a few, a 1972 Queen, a couple of Colonial's, a IXL and my EDC, a SFO Northfield with a non -traditional wharnie blade.

John, not only do you have good taste in knives, (I especially like the I-XL and the Northfield SFO) you have good taste in bourbon. That Bulleit is good stuff. On my top five list.
