older case knives vs new

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

older case knives vs new

Post by chevycannontexasjack »

My name is Jon and this is my fist time posting in here. I have several older case knives from the 40s 60s and 70s,I was wondering how many of you are like I am and don't care too much about the new but, love these older knives I sure do! And I was seeing if I could get opinions on what is better vs the new, or if you simply like newer ones better?

Welcome Jon!

Personally I wont buy any Case knife after 1979 JMO

Should get a wide variety of answers with this question
-( life is too short to carry a cheap knife )-

A good knife is a good knife - I'll buy old or new Case Knives - but I prefer to inspect them first or buy from someone here at AAPK who also knows knives. I will say you have a better chance of getting a good knife with the older ones - mid 1980's to mid 1990's is iffy, late 1990's to today are much better. OH

::welcome:: Jon!
I own a few old ones and a few new ones and there just seems to be something about the older Case knives that feel right. Even though a new one will walk and talk, cut and slice, those old ones just feel good to my hand!

Here you go >>>>>> http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kni ... =2&t=12128

You can also use a smart phone with the pictures on it as well. Use the same instructions from above with the phone.

I personally think that the older knives from 1978 back are just heavier, blade thickness is better and thathey look better! I know lots of them had nickel pins and in my book that's a plus!! I carry a 1978 canoe everyday and it has such a thick blade in it! And sharpens very easy!

Personally I think it depends on a lot of things. Life me for instance I am just getting started into collecting and the older ones are hard and expensive to come by. I like what jww said what is new today will one day be considered old....they may not be worth much today but hopefully they will continue on as Case has for ages and the value will continue to increase.

In my case I look at them more for a hobby and hopefully something to hand down to my son in years to come so age isn't quite as important to me. However I am always on the look out for older ones just so I can say look here this knife is this many years old and look how well it has aged providing someone has taken good care of it :-)

::welcome:: aboard chevycannontexasjack I'm pretty new here also and I think you will find a very good bunch of guys here who know what they are talking about (not me lol) and who are very willing to help out.

I keep most of the older Case knives, from Tested through the dotted knives of the 70's. I'm especially drawn to the dotted knives with the pretty red handles. I don't have a real favorite as far as pattern, just as long as they have the reddish bone handles. If both sides match that's just a plus. I buy and sell a lot of the newer Case knives and occasionally I will keep an odd pattern, but for the most part I sell the newer ones. Nothing against the quality of the newer knives, just that there's something about the look and feel of those older beauties.

::welcome:: to AAPK, Jon! I have both but the older and rarer the better. OH speaks wisdom; learn all you can about antique knives before pulling out your billfold. It will save both your money and your sanity. ::nod::
