SR6380 1982

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

SR6380 1982

Post by mhurkes1 »

I snagged this whittler off flea bay the other week thinking I'd be posting it in the counterfeit watch forum but to my surprise I suspect it is a SFO or a prototype. Any thoughts?

I might be mistaken, but I believe that the "sr" in the pattern number designates a "satin rose" bone handle. Maybe someone more knowledgable will chime in. Still, you gotta love those big whittlers. Nice knife.

Exactly, I thought either it was re-handled or re-bladed. But it looks like Case factory work.

Welcome to the forum mhurkes1.

Just my opinion so please don't take this personal...

To my knowledge, CASE does not do work like that. That knife is a odd bird to me. I believe the knife was actually a part of the CASE 1984' Second Cut Stag set or a similar knife with engraved bolsters. Look at this link for the the 5380 that was not part of that set as it does not have the blade etch but the engraving is identical.

The knife has been apart and rebladed in my opinion. Tim is correct. SR means satin rose and that knife is stag. The "6" in 6380 would indicate a bone handled knife. What is even more odd to me is that the bolsters are engraved on one side of the knife only.

No offense at all. ::tu:: I appreciate any and all opinions. I agree 100% it also strikes me odd that the engraved bolsters are not gold inlay and only one sided. Is there anything in the photos that would indicate a re-blading? As far as the handles are concerned, they are not jigged second cut but "5" genuine stag. IMO

Yes, as I said "The "6" in 6380 would indicate a bone handled knife." Could be a factory error (not likely though based on what I see) for all I know but I don't know if and when a SR 6380 was made but SR was used in the late 70s' to early 80s'. Additionally, hard to tell from pics but normally if that wedge in the center of the 2 backsprings has a scratch or cut, it would also travel into the backsprings. Very hard to tell from the pics though.

IMO...an authentic Case knife, factory error. From the engraved stag whittler set early 80's, but with a mistaken blade put in with a SR6 pattern number, this blade from the NKCA Museum set knife (I think).

Mike, it is a nice looking knife - I recently bought a 6380 from a fellow AAPK member with the idea of putting on a shelf with my other 1970's Case knives. I decided to carry it just for one day - now I can't keep it out of my pocket - a very useful knife that carries well for it's size - and yours has very good looking stag. OH

Ps Mine is all steel - no brass.

Thanks Steve for weighing in on this. BTW, I have found your book to be an indispensable tool whenever the knife collecting bug "bites". ::tu::

OH, this is my first 80 and I see how that pattern could become a good "daily driver". :D
