What is this shield called?
What is this shield called?
Anyone know what the shield on the Wharncliffe Trapper & Tiny Trapper is called?
The Mini Copperhead (in the middle) obviously has a diamond shield, yet my friend insists that it's called an emerald shield. Can any of you Case experts share a bit of insight on this issue as well?
Cheers & Aloha,

I have heard this called a "bow tie".

Re: What is this shield called?
If y'all figure it out, we can add it to the Shields thread or I'll just go ahead and add it anyway.

Re: What is this shield called?
Thanks, Jerry. I just spent a good portion of this morning reading all 24 pages in the Shields thread...good stuff! I've always been a huge fan of unusual shields and seeing some of those that have been posted made me realize what a fool I was for selling off my "accumulation" when I decided to narrow my collecting focus. I recently had a Copperhead rehandled and requested that the original shield be replaced, the guy doing the job had a dickens of a time getting a nice, tight fit on it and ruined several nice pieces of Paua before (sorta) getting it right, and it's still nothing like the original factory fit. I never realized how tricky this little adornment was to install...and this was a simple oval shield, nothing like some of those elaborate shields with intricate patterns and edges.

Re: What is this shield called?
I don't know about modern knives but the knife companies used to use a "parser" to cut the relief for the shield. (one of the many things I've learned on AAPK)
This isn't the worlds best video on the subject but if you're mechanically inclined at all, you should get the idea.

Re: What is this shield called?
Well, thanks to AAPK I've gained a whole new appreciation of the "humble shield," an adornment that I suspect many collectors take for granted (particularly the intricacies of application). Apparently, not every single shield has a specific name...although the ones that do seem to be appropriately named and more or less universally accepted.
Still, and all...
I haven't yet heard a name for the "flowery bow-tie" shield that inspired this thread...oh, wait...did I just create a new shield name?
Cheers & Aloha,

PS--Here's a few more shields from my collection that I really like...I will also post on the Shields thread (so you won't have to, Jerry!) (I'm starting to get the hang of this.)
