This came in my email this morning. What is it? Is it a 57 Charley or a 57 Harolet? What ever you call it, it's very well done.

The best thing about our current weather is that the yard is buried in snow and ice, which means no yard work! This gives me more time to find a good spot down by the frozen river, out of the wind, and wait for the sunrise. This morning was worth the wait.

One hundred four foot DeSoto Falls in northeastern Alabama, named for Hernando Desoto, an early explorer of this area. Whether or not he actually "discovered" the falls, I'm unsure of, but the local Native Americans were well aware of them long before Desoto set foot on American soil.

These falls are on the Little River, which courses along the plateau atop Lookout Mountain, which runs from Chattanooga, TN to near Gadsden. AL and has, over time, dug The Little River Canyon, one of the deepest east of the Mississippi River.

At one time, during the late 1890's to early 1900's, there was a three foot cast iron pipe that ran from this point down to Ft. Payne, AL and provided water power for the mills there. Only evidence of that now are the concrete structures that supported it as it wound down the canyon.

Photos show the falls, the pool below and cliff walls and the exit of the river toward Little River Canyon, a few miles away. The last pic is several miles downstream and is the initial drop as Little River starts its run down through the Little River Canyon.

The Canyon can be hiked, but not easily as there is no trail and the only exit is at the bottom. It can also be kayaked in the Spring, but it's not for the inexperienced. It's quite dangerous.

Those falls are wonderful, Charlie. Did you see the guys on the rock in the water?

Yes.

Little River Canyon is now managed by The National Park Service. When it was run by the State of Alabama, the rules of access to the top of the falls were non-existent.

Now that the NPS has it, all those people in that photo are in violation of the posted rules.

However, folks with a life history of swimming there have been reluctant to stop having their fun.

Expand that pic and look at that rock that projects out from the edge of the falls next to the girl in the two-piece.

People jump off that rock into the pool below.

I have no idea of the depth or underwater structures there.

Those first photos of Desoto Falls and Little River Falls I took with my cell phone last Memorial Day weekend.

These I scarfed off the internet today.

Some of these are Little River Falls at full pool.

Grace's Falls are in the canyon and are 133 ft tall.

The rest are of the river and canyon. The last one shows kayakers going over the Upper Falls.
