Bird nest. Sorry, I can't tell you what kind.

Orioles make nests similar to that.

Anyone have any idea what kind of nest this is? It was located about 20 feet up in a tree, on a very small and exposed branch. I spent many hours sitting in a tree about 10 feet away from it at just below eye level and never saw anything coming or going...leading me to believe it's a leftover from before the weather turned cold...
It was about the size of a softball....

Mike,are there dormice where you hunt?Over here(Netherlands)dormice make such nests to hibernate.Gus

Many species that are roaming the European country side have counterparts in the new world,just wondering wether those dormice are native in the USA.Forgive me for being an ignorant European

BTW, your English is very good. Where and when did you learn it. I admire you folks that can speak more than one language. I ran into a guy one time that spoke five languages. I was in awe.

My guess is that the nest was made by a Yellow Warbler. My second guess is it was made by one of the small Flycatchers.

Jerry,being from the very south of the Netherlands my mother language isn't Duch.This I learnt at Kindergarden,where the nuns were quite happy to teach me that''inne zweagel" is a "lucifer''(a match).Growing up in the sixties I watched German television all the time,children pick up a language very easily.French and English I was taught on high school.Having ten Aussi-born cousins helps to keep my English ''a live"'. So you speak what? German, Dutch, French and English? In which language do you think?

Did you find English and French easier to master since you already spoke three languages? I've heard the first language you learn (other than your birth language) is the most difficult and they come easier every time you learn a new one.

English went quite easy,but French,such a beautiful language,was a pain in the....and still I've some trouble to have a conversation,they talk too fast my computer is not that fast to follow.But still adequate enough to buy a slipjoint on a Belgian flee market

I still struggle to get along with English. A guy from New Jersey worked with me for a few weeks, I think he spoke a different brand of English than I did.
A few weeks ago we took a drive out in the sticks and I noticed all the tumbleweeds piling up against the fences in places. If the weeds aren't cleared before the snow comes, the snow can pile up and make a bridge across the fence, allowing the cattle to wander loose. Of course, it has been a long time since we've had that much snow. Just for the heck of it I took a pic of the tumbleweeds.
Last week we had our first cold spell and the silly antelope came into town to graze on the soccer field lawn. They hang out just north of town and are becoming almost tame. They know the safest place to be during hunting season is close to town. These fellers let me get within 100 feet of them before acting nervous.

Took this shot out my patio door today of an American Kestrel (sparrow hawk) perched on the deck railing with his back to me. I think he was eyeing a field mouse because he took off shortly after this pic was made and headed straight for the ground just around the corner out of my view.
