Ulster Deight Divine Restoration

Post by orvet »

This is a little Dwight Divine Ulster jack that found it is way into my shop for restorative surgery. Last week was a busy week and I didn’t get a chance to take a lot of pics of this project, but I did get a few.

It arrived without any handles and the rocker still in place. The poor thing looked like it had lived a hard life and then the old celluloid handles had decided to start off gassing. I didn’t get a scan of it in the condition it arrived in, but I did take this scan after I had dissembled it and started to clean it up.

Not a lot to tell, I just cleaned it up a bit, as there always seems to be a little mess to clean up after celluloid handles have off gassed. I put nice ebony wood handles on it. This is some of the blackest ebony I have seen. I bought a bunch of this a few years ago. The price was right and the quality is excellent.
Here is a work in progress shot of the ebony on the liners before I pinned it.

And these two scans are the finished knife.
I didn't try to make it look like a brand new knife, that would have been impossible and it would not have looked right.

I tried to keep the knife as authentic as I could, using wood that was used by Ulster when owned by the Divines.
When it was all said and done I thought it had cleaned up rather nicely!

I like the ebony handles. I've got a Valley Forge jack knife where someone scribed their name all across the pile side ebony handle that I'm going to replace. It's about as dark as yours. I'm going to have to hit up some specialty hardware stores to find some myself.

Did you spin the pins on this one? They look spun?

I am not really in business; this is just a fun hobby. I would say I am part-time at the hobby of repairing knives.

I am disabled and retired. When my health permits I really enjoy working on knives.
I took 6 or 7 months off this summer to recover from knee surgery, which has really helped me get around much better. Also my other health issues seem to be under control for the moment, thank the Good Lord, so I have been able to get more shop time recently than I have in a long time. As long as I don’t over do it or have another health issue I hope to keep on fixing knives. For me, repairing, restoring & customizing knives is a lot more fun than just collecting a bunch of knives. ::nod::

About all I can claim about this knife is that I consider myself lucky to be the owner, lucky to be acquainted with Dale who can Make chicken salad out of chicken ****, lucky to have received the knife in a POS tradeoff from a great Alaskan forum member that was of sound mind to send me a great knife with outgassing celluloid, and lucky to be a member of the greatest knife forum on the planet. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to everyone...Herb ::ds::
