My wife & I took a drive to the eastern side of Oregon last weekend. Along in the middle of nowhere, probably 15 to 20 miles from the nearest town we saw a show tree! I figure there must be over 1000 pair of shoes there. I have never seen anything about it, but my dad said there are several out there in the desert. My wife googled it and said there were 70+ shoe trees in the USA.

I have no idea what the purpose is!

There are even a couple arrows in the last pic. I guess someone was afraid the shoes might walk away?

The purpose of our trip to eastern Oregon trip was to visit the Painted Hills near John Day Oregon.
The Painted Hills are natural occurrence caused by the type of clay deposited in layers and the drying of the clay in the sun. It looks like someone painted them, even when you are right there close up.

It's a cactus known as Night Blooming Cereus and sometimes as Queen of the Night.

It's the best smelling flower I've ever had the pleasure to sniff too.

Met up with my old flying buddy Moon a few Sundays ago. We decided that Sunday would be a great day to commit aviation. Dragged out the J-3 clone;


And head off into the rough and bumpy blue yonder. I've had rougher flights in the past, but not many. LOL Cubs have light wing loading and every updraft hits you in the butt. Like driving down a bad road. It was a blast.

Smokin right along at 72MPH indicated and about 800' AGL. Ground speed was closer to 50MPH. Cubs aren't well known for speed.

We had a 22KT crosswind at landing. The published limit for these things is around 18KT. Moon made it look too damn easy. He asked me if I wanted to land it, and I asked him if he wanted to live to see the sun go down. I let him drive on that trip

Here's a link to a short movie of the landing. Marc kept that left wing low all the way to touch down just to keep it lined up on the strip. THe camera was level with the wings. The plane was leaning.

We kept the flight pretty tame. 20 years ago we did all kinds of crazy stuff. Thinking back it's a damn wonder we're still here to talk about it. Guess the Good Lord had his quota of fools and idiots on the days we were messing up.

Great plane pics, they took me back a few years. Used to enjoy flying upside down in a Decathlon, spent a few hours in a Tiger Moth. Love the old tail draggers.

Picked up this Kennedy tool box at the flea market for $45. Not the best bargain, but not too bad either. It had some good stuff in it, but alot of crap also.

Over the years I've had the pleasure of meeting Kermit Weeks when he was a skinny kid with long hair and guitar. Got to know Pappy Spinks and Duane Cole. Used to hang out at Glen Frick's ARRESTI Aerodrome and spent LOTS of time at Oak Grove and later Ft Worth Spinks airport.

Have flown a couple of Stearman's, Champs, Chiefs, Taylorcraft, and a bunch of experimental stuff.

When we were younger, we'd take turns trying to make other puke in a Pitts S-2. Came back with red blood shot eyes on more than one occasion.

Put tracks on the roof of Hangar 29 at Spinks with a Stearman one afternoon. Got cussed at good over that one. LMAO I noticed the tracks were painted over when I was down there the other day.

It was fun while it lasted.

I've only been in prop planes twice and both were staid commercial birds.

That said those were the two best flights I ever had. Big jets are so boring!

At MCAS Cherry Point, our equipment park was on the edge of the strip where the F-4 Phantoms did touch & goes. It gives you a woody just watchin' those bad azz mo-fo's. They were something else. Not part of my experience but I hear the boys on the ground were always happy to see the fast movers comin' in for a run. Guess it all depends on your perspective.

When I was stationed at NAS Cecil Field, JAX, FL it was an "air to mud" base. A-7's were pretty much the only birds there. Every now and then the Marines would stop over in their F-4's. It was always great to see something different on the flight line. When it cam time to go, the Marines would light off the burners and haul ass down the runway, they'd lift off enough to get the gear up and hold those big bastards at about 25' until they got to the end of the runway. At that point, they'd pull the nose up and climb like a homesick angel. Another thing that happened when they did that was that fuel would dump out the vent and ignite. When they did it at night, it looked like a rocket taking off.

Quite the show and yes it did piss the air to mud guys off. LOL

One day a couple of F100s Super Sabers arrived for my air support. Out of Phan Rang. It was one of the last missons of that fine air craft as I understand they were taken out of service in "71.

My wife & I spent most of the weekend canning, peaches, pears & salsa; I made 2 gal of white Concord grape juice. We will can the juice tonight when we finish off the salsa.
While going out for more tomatoes and jar lids we hit a couple estate sales.

I got a nearly new 6’ Wagner step latter of $15, (sorry no pic).

I also got a Craftsman doweling jig in the box, apparently unused with the receipt from 1983 and another handy item, a set of dowel centers to get the dowel holes perfectly aligned. It too appeared to be unused; both items for $5.

I also got a Craftsman dovetail fixture set; also in the box unused with the instruction booklet; also $5.

Then a Craftsman 1/3 hp general purpose electric motor, 1725 RPM, wired with electrical cord and heavy duty switch, in the original plastic carrying case and instruction book for $10. That is the right speed to be used on a buffer.

I even found a knife for my daughter, an older Henckel’s wood handle hawkbill paring knife. Maybe I can get a pic after I clean it up.

It was a good weekend for estate sales and they were a nice break from the canning!

Wow, great snags dale. Around here garage sales really are bad. Flea markets are still okay but heading the garage sale way too I am afraid.
When I say bad I mean the folks look up what every thing is priced at (usually flea bay) and ask top dollar.
