Drilling antler scales

Post by Paladin 51 »

When you use elk or stag scales do you glue to liner first? Also do you use a jig of some sort as i can see with the roundness of the antler that it would be difficult to keep the liner square to drill bit so pins are straight or do you just eyeball it

You might try gluing one side on and then drilling it from the other side. Then you can glue on the other side and drill it from the side you first drilled. Taking the knife apart is still the best way to go though. You can glue your handles on and drill them from the back, then pin them while you have access to both sides.

see my YouTube video on repairing schrade swinden rivet knives in the tutorials section, this shows the jig I use and yes I glue the scales to the liner first.

Here is one that I made from scrap steel. Many thanks to MuskratMan for the idea! I made mine kinda small because most people only have a small tabletop drill press. I have a tabletop and a floor model and can use my jig with either drill press. The top on my jig is 3" x 5" (I think). I may make a few more, if there is any interest.
