What company should I start collecting? GEC seems to be good
I am just starting to collect knives. Well I have a few old ones but want to collect some limited edition ones. The new company GEC seems to be a great fit. New company so I start in at the beginning. They look great and for the most part they are getting great reviews. It seems there are some issues with them but as I read the reviews there are only a few people complaining, although these few people seem to complain a lot.
Now I need your comments before I start my quest to start this collection. Any help is appreciated.

I am trying to find a stag one to buy but they seem to be all sold out. Matter of fact most of them are sold out. From what I figure from earlier posts there was 1500 knives made in the first run. I need help finding a small stag model, I also like the Horsecut. Hell I like most of them. I will scour E-bay till I find one. I am on a mission (Or have I caught something).

I want american made for sure, the thing with the others is that they have been around for a long time and I am so far behind in collecting them. I have some Queens and a Schatt, I realize Canal street is new but I heard they do nothing but finish the knives from parts they buy from somewhere else. I think the new company will be as collectable as the others , at least I hope.

I have just joined but have been reading the forum for a long while. I did some research before deciding to ask about GEC. I have read all the other comments, some people who comment have been here a long time and have valuable input. One can tell they love knives.rosconey wrote:only a few huh-

come back and tell us one way or the other after you actually spend some money
I see that you are new to the forums.
I also see that you only comment on the Great Eastern Knives and it is always BAD.
Sorry but I think you may be just stirring up junk.

hey if it makes you feel better go for it-i just found this place -btw# of posts has very little to do with knowledge or loving knives-
and arent you new also?maybe your a company TROLL trying to make people look bad so gec looks a little better-
and ive only comented on gec because thats what has been the hot topic-
also you should know at another forum i bitched about a defective kershaw that was returned still defective-so im not out to blast gec for fun-they earned all the press-do a search at another forum and read the email reply from one of the big shots about getting a knife that was subpar serviced-but i guess you did research-lol

Just want to keep this a good place to discuss and understand. Again, tell you opinion but be sure to respect others too. We welcome everyone here and each has a valuable lesson for us to learn. Enough said, lets keep knife collecting fun.

I agree. AAPK is a much friendlier place than BF.
The main reason I don't spend a lot of time there is the attitude of some of the people.
AAPK is much more genteel & friendly. I would like to see it stay that way.
Just my 2¢,
Dale

sorry guys-his comments about me just got me riled up-
the way i see it -i have every right to whine about gec because i bought one-unlike others who condemn me without ever buying the product-
i had big expectations for gec, been waiting to get a knife from them-then i get stuck with a lemon a month or better after the initial poor quality knives had been sent out-so it looks from my seat that qc hasnt been taken seriously by the company-

Well I bought 2 and they were so bad that I did not realize they had half stops. I did not get mad, I understand start-ups and manufacturing processes and the QC problems they WILL have. I put over 2 decades in QC and I expected that there would be a few bummers in the first shipments from a true start up. It is a factory of apprentice cutlers where Canal Street Cutlery started up with master cutlers from Schrade. I did have a nice conversation with President and co-owner Bill Howard, who took the problems with my knives very seriously. I know you are not going to get any resolution by talking with a sales manager, ain't gonna happen.
Here are my first 2 knives in this post with pictures on this thread.
http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kni ... php?t=3507
I'm quite glad I did not allow these to influence me. I have purchased 17 (19 in all now) additional knives and quality ranges from average to near custom and all blades are sharp. Let me say also that all the problems are not listed here, mostly the highlights.
Also, they are moving quickly to fix the problems in their manufacturing process. They are serious about improving consistant quality. Even the last 17 I bought, quality ranges from average to near custom. To a QC guy that is STILL a problem, but they are improving.
Let me also say I do understand someone being angry about a defective product, it is one of the natural feelings a human is going to have. GEC is having growing pains, we need to understand that, it's only natural for them not to be perfect. But last I heard they had a 5,000 knife order from somewhere. So, it is posible that there will be delays getting knives repaired.
In the long haul, I think these knives will be highly sought after by collectors, but that is just my opinion.

I had also heard this before, that they were getting their finished blades from Queen, I believe. I fail to see, though, how this makes any difference in choosing one U.S. company over another.jonet143 wrote:hey ridetheedge, where did you get your info that canal street buys their blades elsewhere and assembles them?
As a matter of fact, the Canal Street knives that I own are of superb quality, fit, and finish. (and I don't work there...

Sorry for the comment. I was working on not much sleep and as my family would say a little grouchy.
The response's from the rest of you is why I have been coming here to read and now chat.
You seem like a great bunch.
Ok so I think I want a Great Eastern small trapper with Stainless but I cannot find one listed anywhere. Are they sold out?
I am not sure where I read the Canal street thing, but what I heard is they get various parts from a US cutlery place, and they assemble and finish them.
I almost chose them but this kind of turned me off.

canal street may get there blades done from another american vendor-but if thats what it takes -so be it-
probably save a ton on equipment and heat treat set up,and allowed them to concentrate on getting started with one less worry-
i would think they are made to canal streets design-i may be wrong-

There should be 2 - 3 3/4 inch trappers I believe. They would be the GEC trademark and one is Rogers Bone, the other Sheffield Bone. I believe they are stainless, Bryan may know more. I haven't seen these 2 for sale yet.ridetheedge wrote: Ok so I think I want a Great Eastern small trapper with Stainless but I cannot find one listed anywhere. Are they sold out?

I just got two shipments in from GEC that are both stainless. One is a Sheffield Tobacco and the other is a Rogers Green Tea, don't know where they come up with these names. I would assume that Bryan and Bill Horn will be getting some of these as well. The wife hasn't photographed them yet so I can't post a picture.

Yeah... I did get a few of the Rogers Green Tea jigged bone GEC's today. Sheffield jigged bone is supposed to follow soon. I'm hoping to get a couple pictures to post asap.
As Perry stated, they both have 440C stainless steel, which is real good stuff IMO. I'd take it over 420HC anyday (I think most would agree).
I'm just a little guy though who only gets 3 of each knife GEC makes. I'm no professional dealer like knifekid. I mostly started getting them to examine for a potential club knife alternative.
I will say that Knifekid (Perry) is a top shelf dealer IMO
! He would be a great source for ya if you choose to go the GEC route.

Yeah, I'll take 440C over 420HC any day. 440C is kind of the standard all other stainless steels are measured by. I have never bought from Perry, but I hear he is a good dealer, one you can trust. That's what I hear through the grapevine.Bryan wrote:Yeah... I did get a few of the Rogers Green Tea jigged bone GEC's today. Sheffield jigged bone is supposed to follow soon.
