Upstairs, Downstairs.......I'm Out In De Kitchen

Post by 9ball »

:) Granny always called this her 'Chicken Knife'. Levine 4 Rev. sezs it is a 'Killing Knife'.
Edge is shown and ends where arrow is. It is a tad over seven inches in length.

I started to put this in the "Aluminum Handle" thread. Looks better here, don't you think?

Very cool 8) ...looks like you could peel the stripe off of the NINE ball with that baby. ::nod::

Nothing better than good kitchen cutlery. I've shown our Chef's knife in other threads, so I'll go with this utility/slicer that Charlie Davis made up for us. It shows a hard working patina for sure.

cutco

Post by Mossdancer »

Hey;
These are the three I asked about in my letter to cutco. They are a 22 top 23 middle and 24 bottom made in the 1950's. watched the same three sell on erip for 79+ 8 shipping. I think theres a buck to be made in this category for someone with more drive than myself.

I have had this one on here once before also.
Excellent knife, carbon steel, hardly any handle wear. A solid old knife about 13 inches in length.
Remington quit making kitchen cutlery because of the War.

Got a few others I will try and get on here soon.

Got a mission

FYI: Julia Child collected knives also.

Hello Folks :D ,

Here is one for the Road. :|

About 11 inches in length. It would clean up, but I may lose the etch. Any comments on that?

Later,
9ball :)

hello 9ball;
check out the wood grain on third from top, my remington did the same to beef yours did to chickens. and old case xx made to appear older. A couple of russells mid to late 1800's, same stamp as yours only more used. Yes you will ruin etch. the shorter is barely discernable. The LF&C is 1917 chow hall. the shapleigh is stamped shapleigh hardware over 1834-1934.

That some very nice ones W.B.. I see those 'skinners' on eBay titled "Indian Trade Knives" also. That "made to look old Case" was one of the first knives I owned as a kid. Even survived a camp fire and which I later replaced the handles. Do not know what even happen to it after I got interested in girls. You can still find some nice ones if you poke around. A restaurant in K-Town buys fruit wood from us to smoke some of their meat dishes with. Most of the folks that cook there are "chefs"( none of them are celebrities yet) and they collect kitchen knives also, but they use theirs. They even have special rolls and storage areas for their knives & steels. Reminds me of Me. Some of those older Gerbers with aluminum handles are very nice/wanted as are the Cutcos. Their little "Miming" steak knife is excellent for trout and doves. I saw some made in Japan, but I do not know much about them, maybe modern made not sure on that. Gerber got some kinda award back in the 50's for their alumimun designs. IIRC One fellow I know has grown to like Anza's as El Lobo's, I like them also.......Heavy Weights in my book.
This is a small niche market like the fobs we looked at. Not a lot of counterfeiting there yet, but I have seen some. I got a set of knock-off Ginsus around here someplace to prove it. Plus those Japanese Gerbers I looked at. I have also seen some counterfeiting in tableware, both sterling & plated but I will not go there unless folks like glass, ice cream knives, etc.

9ball

Here is another couple of Russells with a full etch & some old tableware.

Well now, that about settles the meat cutters for the big shindig.....

It looks like both Mossdancer and 9ball have quite an interest in cuttin', cookin', and carvin', by the looks of those old beauties... ::tu:: ::tu::

I'll just bring along my wife's newest kitchen gadget.....

Image

Maybe we can get the two Celebrity Chefs to mix it up a bit, to see who gets to use it to dice up the scorpion. Just for a little excitement during Happy Hour, of course. ::nod:: :mrgreen:

I will Volunteer to stir everything up. :)

W.B., It looks to me that scorpion juice put a major patina on Bill's Anza. What do you think will happen with that Cutco?
Bill, Those handles on that new one look like they got a little SandBar Stag juice on them, is it so?

After much thought; Who would fake a Ginsu? I assume China, but why? :?

Took this in on a bayonet barter along with another in foreign forum. This will work at picnic for a camp knife or slaughtering the elephant if we want a chop.

Here is what Sparky uses to debone or fillet the opponent...when he's not using the pitchfork. Made by a fellow named Mark Entwistle. You should see my wife slice off tackle with this knife. ::nod::

Kitchen or dining table

Post by Mossdancer »

Hey Niner and Wolfman;
Was over the river in Wash. here awhile back and picked up a couple of these. Know anything of their history. The shield in the stamp is hard to read but it says 1865. We are gonna have to start planning for a picnic for summer 1910.

WB,

Sure looks like American Cutlery Company circa 1879-1928...Chicago, Illinois. Trademark was 1865. Name changed to American Stainless Cutlery Company in 1928. From page 6 of Goins' last edition.

Cool handle. 8)

When and if you guys get dinner done, I will provide these classy little mop handled silver knives to help eat in up in gentlemanly style. From Sheffield. I bought them 'cause they were cheap and pretty.

MOP

Post by Mossdancer »

Phil:
That MOP on the older knives is fantastic, I have them on some old LFC fruits.
Should anyone else read this and want one I found some giant scallop
shells with about 3/8' thick ( I was gonna say MOP but I will reserve that til I buy one and polish it.) white substance lining it. They were about 7" shells and 20-30 bucks each. They are in a shop in Garibaldi Or. Let me know and I will pick one up for you the next time im there.

Heey Niner;
I was just admiring all them fancy slicers in ignoring knives and decided I couldn't do that thread justice. So, I brought yours back to the top. This
Old Sabatier is goodness knows how old. I would be willing to bet it has provided help in lots of thousands of meals tho. Whoever owned it certainly loved it. The embellishment of the antler handle is a great fit it's
tighter than the proverbial chiggers behind stretched across a rain barrel.
I wonder how much the first dinner this helped with cost to put on the table. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Granny was right. I just acquired a 1950s Wostenholm catalog. There is a knife with a blade just like yours but with a wooden handle. It is called a 'chicken sticker' in the catalog. :) s-k

Thanks Gary.

David makes really fine knives. It was his first Chefs knife in almost 40 years of making knives. Said it took him way too long to put on the hand sanded satin finish. But it is a great knife for sure.
