Any rimfire shooters?

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

Any rimfire shooters?

Post by Gr8Scout »

For years I've wanted to build up a special purpose Ruger 1022, you know, one of those exercises to spend as much money as possible to turn out a .22 that will match the performance of a $129 Marlin straight out of the box?

But what the heck. I spent most of my spring and summer building up this one. Factory stock just mildly reshaped, barrel channel opened up to accept an aftermarket .920 inch stainless steel heavy barrel. 3/8" cheek pad to raise my eye up perfectly to use the scope and provide some cheek weld. Miscellanious inner parts replacements and modifications. Camo paint job inspired by a WW2 German north atlantic dreadnaught. 'Parade' sling from an M1. Aftermarket magazine easier to use with gloves on and a homemade magazine release button for the same reason. The rifle was built to shoot the Remington subsonic hollow point, and it does it very well and quietly. This puppy is pure hell on the bushytails in the dead of winter. I'll be out in the woods with it in a few hours, rattling a squirrel call in one hand and holding a cup of coffee in the other. Wish me luck.

And, oh, yeah.... if ya want an accurate, inexpensive rimfire, just buy the darn Marlin, will ya?

That is one fantastic looking rifle Phil, it looks "bad to the bone" ::nod:: . I have always wanted to do that but never could get over the $129 Marlin issue  ..I see that rifle and it makes me want to look over my shoulder for a German sniper.. ::paranoid::

Some of the greatest fun in shooting is plinking with a rimfire..No pressure, no kick, just relax and shoot..I currently have a Ruger lever action 17 HMR riding in the truck. I went the other route, why spend $5.00 on a box of 500 22 shells if you can spend $10.00 on 50 17 HMR..

Go give them bushy tails hell for us... :D

Yep, I grew up shooting a Winchester model 69-A. Cheap looking stock, heavy barrel, peep sights and you could just drill nails with it. Plenty accurate, that's for sure. I also have a few other oldies and favor a HI-STANDARD Model H-D MILITARY, that is one fun semi auto pistol to shoot. Rimfires are great, shoot all day and it doesn't break the bank. Another favorite I have was made in the 1930's, design ahead of it's time is a Savage Sporter. It has a German designed stock, a snabble (sp) at the foreend, no doubt these lost popularity because of WWII. I must of been born with a knife in one hand and a gun in the other. ::smirk:: I have about 8 .22 rimfires in my gun safe, Ca Law. ::disgust::

Alrighty Guys!
And Bill, didn't you show me a pic once of a Browning semi-auto (otherwize known as the classiest .22 ever made)?

I've got about a dozen of these sub calibers myself. We used to just call 'em ".22s" but with the advent of the two new .17s, need to use the term 'rimfire'. A pic here of my .17HMR NEF sportster with a sheath of my design crafted by our own Paul Long.

I don't shoot a lot any more, but weekend before last I took my 17 year old daughter out shooting, her first time. I also took my youngest son, (22 yrs).

The .22 we used is my Remington. I am the third generation in my family to own it. My Dad said that this rifle has put more venison on the family table than all the deer rifles we own. My Grandfather bought this rifle when he was a boy, about 12 years old, IIRC.

I grew up in the mountains of Southern Oregon. We were the last year-around-residents out of Ashland, up Dead Indian Rd. toward Klamath Falls. We got electricity in 1968, about the time I started my senior year of High School.

From the time I was 12 or 13, I would take this .22, a box of shells and wander around the hills. I used to shoot squirrels & take them to an old trapper who had a cabin next to our place and he would make stew from them.

I also used to shoot Grey Diggers, a type of ground squirrel, that would ruin the hay crops. They were a lot of fun to shoot. I used to be able to hit one on a dead run at 50 yards. The operative words are used to. I even killed a big rattlesnake once.

After taking my daughter & son shooting, I remembered how much fun it was. I think we will be doing it more often. It brought back a lot of good memories for me.

This old Remington isn't a beauty, but it sure does shoot good!

As you know Dale, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Those are some nice looking rifles. All great firearms & fun for Family and Friends.

Top-Remington Model 514: This is a perfect Tree Rat/Varmit Rifle around here. Single shot.......perfect for bird shot & 22 shorts. I think Remington only made this for a few years in the 50's, maybe earlier.
I can remember when I was a kid the neighborhood store sold a single round for five cents. A shotgun shell was 25 cents, more than a gallon of gas or pack of smokes. Every shot was made to count, kinda like billiards.

Middle-Marlin Glenfield Model 25: This one has seen the most use in the pass years, I guess you could call it a two acre rifle. My Dad gave me this the day I turned 21, even though I had already serve in the Army and was married.
Must have been some kinda "Right of Passage" back in the day.

Botttom-Ruger 10/22: I just got this one last week-end & that is what I brought it for, to Modify! Lots of after-market stuff.
I really like that camo job for the white stuff, you put some thought in that one. I like the way you had that sheath made also, just too good.

This thread has gave me the fever to go fire off a few rounds.

9ball you’re last post he brought back some old memories for me I want to share.

Back when I was 16 my dad gave me a Christmas present that really made me think I was a man.
It was a Remington 22 pump. Just what I needed because back then my lever action BB gun was a bit week. It took me many shots to brake those glass insulators on the power lines.
Now I could do it in 3 or 4 shots. I missed a lot. :) I came from a family of 8 kids and at age 17 (TIME for me to move OUT). Dad said leave that 22 here (I did but was mad). Then about 8 years ago he asked me if I still wanted that old 22 and I said YES. He said ok give me $50.00 and its yours (again I did what my dad said). I still have it.

Thanks 9ball for you post and using the words "Right of Passage".
And I too had fun with those tree rats.
We could not use the word squirrell cuz the dog would go CRAZZY.
