The New Harmony Bridge was built as a crossing for The Big Wabash River in 1931. In 1952, when I lived in New Harmony Indiana, it cost ten cents to cross this bridge and they said it would become "free" when it was paid off. Today it's still a toll bridge, costs $1.00 and I wouldn't advise crossing it. The included picture does not do it's condition justice.

I used to cringe crossing those old bridges in an 18 wheeler. The old Vicksburg bridge was very similar. There was enough room for two trucks to meet IF both of you had your trucks in your lane. There were a lot of mirrors swapped or knocked off the RH side on that old bridge. I never lost one but thought I was going to on several occasions. I've been on some WAY worse looking bridges than that one while hauling WAY overweight permit loads. Driving up on a bridge in the middle of nowhere with a 25T limit and your rig is putting over 80T of smash on the ground sure makes that rear end pucker when you roll out across it. Never fell through, but I imagine I bent a few of 'em. I was on my route but that don't help much when you fall through.

My cousin hauls out of Mt. Vernon Indiana and most times he runs up the Indiana side of the Big Wabash but if he has to cross into Illinois, he won't do it at New Harmony.

This is my buddy Tom with the 41" Muskie he caught on Lake Kincaid Illinois. I'm pretty sure it was late October but more likely early November of 2003. This was the last hour we were on the lake. It had turned cold that morning and after he caught his fish, we trailered the boat and headed back north. The first day we were out, I caught a 36" Muskie. Well, "I caught" is subjective. We had a guide the first day there. We had been on the water less than a half hour and the guide had lines out trolling. When one hooked onto a fish, they handed the rod to me and I reeled it in. I've never really felt like I caught the fish in the purest sense of the term.

Several states had a 24th Regiment and some had two.

I think tying it back to a specific unit might even be impossible for an expert on Civil War militaria.

And then there's always the possibility it's a modern day remake. (A little research showed only oval Civil War buckles with US on them.)

Hey Jerry - First off he's not a kid, though he is the youngest member. He comes from a family that doesn't age, you know the kind. We're working on getting some recording done and hopefully this summer it will happen. When it does I'll see to that you get one.
