I have caught many,many fish,in my younger days,with that ""Mitchell 300""______that was the reel of choice for most of us guys !!!! we had a Mitchell 404 ??? I think,???, fishing,for the stripers,below the dam____________ahh*** then came the bait casters,and the spinning reels,were put away

I was in an A-7C CorsairII squadron ( VA-82, CAG-8, USS AMERICA, CVA-66) in the fleet and an F-8J outfit in the RE-serves for a bit after I got out. I had LOTS of fun messing with those reserves heads until I got out.

82 has been de-commissioned and the AMERICA has been struck from the roster and sunk.
My old reserve squadron VF-202 (now VFA-202) is still going strong and has been to the gulf several times.

Most of my time was spent at the NATC Pax River MD.I was in ASEG(All Services Evaluation Group)that did BIS(Board of Inspection and Survey)trials on aircraft being readied for service use.Among the ones we did were the A-7 and the CH-53 helicopter and OV-10 Bronco.
Most of our aircraft were F-4's(we had F-4 #13 as our earliest bird)and one of the last things I did was work with people from the RAF and Royal Navy on the F-4K & M models.We also had a couple of the ACLS(Automated Carrier Landing System)F-4G models.Had many projects including working with people from Wright Patterson AFB on radar reflections(read stealth)and spin recovery techniques utilizing parachutes.
They also had an S-2 fitted with a device that was ostensibly used to retrieve downed flyers from the ocean.Turns out it was actually used to retrieve cameras that were orbiting above the earth and parachuted down.This was before the advent of spy satellites.
A lot of other stuff but I probably shouldn't say anything about it.

When I got out, we were still in summer uniforms so the hash mark never got sewn on. Some of the decorations are retro to my unit after I was discharged.

Wow! A full set of Zebco Cardinals, 3, 4, and 6, I think.
I still have my Cardinal 3 with an extra spool. My ultralight rig of choice.

Old time recycling. A crow bar made from a warped buggy axle by either my grandpa or oldest uncle circa 1900.

Buck, that's really cool. The old guys were really inventive, probably out of necessity, but still inventive.

American ingenuity, I wonder how much of there is left TJ? My grandfather and dad were great at this kind of thing. They didn't have the money to buy it so they made it.

I'm sure that it still lives, though not to the extent as in days of old. Would imagine that it is still alive in the farming community and in specialized trades where certain tools need to be made and cannot be purchased.

I think there is a tremendous amount of ingenuity flourishing in this country.
People in this country were incredibly inventive.
Why, just piddlin ol me has conceived of ideas and put them on paper and brought them to life. I believe there are lots of men and women, at their benches with all kinds of inventive projects.
Here’s a few of mine. Dreamed up every dad burn one of em.

nice of you to say so. I learned to hand cut, with chisel and saw, the mortice and tenon that connects the legs of a table to the apron. Old timy was of making a table. Very secure with todays glues as well as in the 1600s with their hide glue. Some of those tables were made that way.
I took a class with Ian Kirby. A renowned English woodworker.

Charlie, I all but wore out my Cardinal 3 after years of fishing with it. (not the one in the picture). I have 3 spools for it.
What a reel it is. Glad to see someone else using one.
Actually there is one larger Zebco Cardinal in that series. A saltwater model.
