Boker BO2004ST and BO2004STC difference.

There are 3 different boker 2004 lockbacks.

This is BO2004ST with 440C SS blade.



and this is BO2004ST too (stainless steel or carbon steel????).



boker BO2004STC (stainless steel or carbon steel????).


the question is, the two of the bottom, please, tell me the blade material.

Gotta tell ya, I'm stumped...
The first knife pictured is from Boker's website. That is current manufacture I'm assuming.
The second knife you show appears to be the same model Boker has been selling since 2002. 440C stainless steel blade with reverse frosted etch. (Just as an aside, I think Boker only started making this model - 2004 - in the early 1980s. Before 2002 it was made with 440A stainless steel instead of 440C).

I've never seen the third knife in a Boker catalog. There are several sellers on the internet selling both of the knives you've shown. The online sellers state that both models are stainless steel, both have stag handles, but there is a $50 difference in price!
The blade etch on knife #3 is of recent vintage. I have never seen a model 2004 with a carbon steel blade - but it may be a special order.

I am only guessing now, but some differences may be in the quality of the stag or the cost of the blade etch.
The 2004ST description states that it comes with a brown leather sheath - maybe that's the difference.

Just to muddy the waters a bit more - hey it's what I do...
In this 2001 catalog, Boker calls the stag material "structured sambar stag". How might this be different from the "genuine stag handles", I dunno.

thanks for your help rangerbluedog, I am so confused.
Surfing on the web looking for boker 2004stc (the last one) found a lot of inconsistency about the blade's material. Some places says that the blade is from carbon steel and another says that is stainless steel.

I'm pretty sure the ST stands for STAG. But no idea what the C means .

Sorry the SS is for Stainless Steel.

Blue, Boker "usually" marks their knife if it's blade is stainless, either by etch on the blade or at the tang stamp don't they? But this could fall under a statement you made in a post long ago, "there's still so much unknown about Boker that needs to be learned".

STC is the carbon version of the BO2004ST. I have several versions of this model in many different handle patterns. I have found that many "selling" sites have either the wrong picture posted or the wrong item description.

The first model of this hunter lockblade actually was in 1985. They have issued many since with or without etching and in several handle patterns. If you are buying from someone who has the box, you can get the model number for the knife being sold. I actually purchased a stainless steel stag 2004 but was shipped a carbon version. Once you have the stainless and carbon versions in had you can see the difference.

You should also have the word "stainless" on the tang of the 2004 ST. The carbon version will only have the Boker and Germany stamped on the tang. "Carbon" will not be on the tang stamp.

Also there is a version of stag handle that is considerably thicker than the regular stag model. I will post some pix today. The STC stag version has stag handles that are about 1 1/2 in thick!

I got an email from boker about this knife 2004STC, and they says:



This knife was a limited run we did with carbon blades...it was not in our catalog, sorry.
We sold them from 2005-2010. You got the one from 2009 that was an anniversary one.

And in another mail they said:
the carbon steel used in 2004STC is C75.

well case resolved.

I thought I was onto something for a little while, but no. In the 1993 Boker catalog they list a "genuine structured stag" (2004ST) and a "genuine polished stag" (2004). The polished stag looks a lot like a second cut stag to me. Both had stainless steel blades.
