1980 Stag Buck 112
1980 Stag Buck 112
Hi folks,
I was wondering if someone could give me a little help on this one. I bought this knife about 8 years ago at a swap meet for $45. I believe it was made in 1980 by looking at the dots on the tang. It seems to be from the custom shop if the sheath is original. Can anyone give me any more info on this knife and what the approximate value would be today.
Thanks in advance,

Hi Sketch,
Your 112 looks to have a 3 dot blade. The 3 dot blades were made in 1980 and are 440C. It is nearly impossible to tell you the true value of your knife, due to the fact that it is worth what someone will pay for it on a given day. That value can and will change like the direction the wind is blowing (if you get my drift).
That said....you did well to get that knife for $45 IMHO. About 2 years ago Buck made up some 112's with some old stock 3 dot blades that were in their shop, they made some with stag like yours and sold them on their web special page for $50 each (that was a hell of a deal). I bought one and love it. I'd say your knife's value should be at the $50 - $80 range (it could bring in more if the right buyer was hot to have it). If you decide that you don't want it some day drop me a line and we'll work something out, stag knives are one of my favorites.

Re: 1980 Stag Buck 112
Thanks gino and JB,
It's interesting to know that the 440c was used on this knife. I was thinking that a stag knife like this would be more in the $120 range. Since it's only worth about $50, I think I'll strap it to the belt and start giving the 440c some use. Thanks again for the info.

I just took another look at your 112 photo's and noticed that your knife's blade appears to be MP (mirror polished). That is not all that common, it also points to the knife being from the old custom shop, as you stated. That may push your value up to the $80-$120 area. If you try to sell it make sure you point to the MP blade. Enjoy it!

Re: 1980 Stag Buck 112
Thanks JB,
I think I will put it up for sale at $120 and see if I can get any bites. Thank for the tip on the mirror polish. It will have to wait though, because my wife is expecting a baby next week. I have to put my knife hobby on hold for a few weeks.
Thanks again,

Congrats on the forthcoming little one sketch!
If you don't know how to turn a little guy or gal into a knife collector, just give one of us old grandpas a holler, we will be glad to teach you how to turn 'um into collectors!
Seriously,
The 112 is a very nice knife, but a baby is a blessing from God!

Dale,
I don't know how I missed this post way back in August. Thanks for your well wishes. Our baby boy arrived arrived healthy as can be and we praise the good Lord for this little blessing. I still have the Buck 112 and I think I'm going to try to sell it. I have my eye on some of the new GECs. Thanks again,

Shetch, I think to the right buyer 100-120 is in the right range. Congrats to the new addition to your family.

Thanks gino.
Re: 1980 Stag Buck 112
Today I've got a set of 3 dot stag 112's. One is a standard stag that has been used and abused, the tip was broken off and the blade re-profiled. The other I got from Sketch here on the forum, note the MP blade. This looks to be an old CS knife, the first knives out of the CS were standard knives pulled from the production line and customized (MP blades and up-graded handle materials) So the best of both worlds here, standard & semi-custom from the same 3 dot era.

Re: 1980 Stag Buck 112
Wow! Those knives look like they were made to be together. It's neat to see one that has been used and put through its paces and one that has been pampered its whole life. I'm glad you like the knife John and I can see it has found a good home. Thanks for posting the pics.
