The first knife here has early Winterbottom, dyed red for Case Bros.
Then a later style for Queen when they were doing aluminum bolsters.
Next an 80s-90s synthetic, then an inadvertent orange dyed example (anyone know about these?). A recent dark synthetic, and finally, a surface-dyed recent example - 90s? 2000s?

What makes it "Winterbottom"? Is it the fact that it is cut lengthwise to the knife?

Samuel Winterbottom was the name of the man that started and owned the factory in Egg Harbor. Much as Rogers bone is also named for the Rogers Manfacturing Co.

The real thing is getting kinda scarce! Seems that the winterbottom knives get snapped up quick unless they're labeled wrong (as delrin). Here's a few vintage Queens.

Nice Dan Burkes TJ, these are advertised as Winterbottom but I was told these are not true Winterbottom bone, but repoductions. Great looking knives either way .

In David Krauss's book 'American Pocketknives A History of Schatt & Morgan and Queen Cutlery' states " All Winterbottom bone came from Samuel Winterbottom Sons which was originally called Winterbottom Cutlery Works the author goes on and states that the Winterbottom foctory was sold in 1968 and no more Winterbottom was produced.

The scales on your knives are Winterbottom type jigging but not original Winterbottom made in Egg Harbor. Queen continued to use old Winterbottom stock that they saved until recently.C Risner had Queen make him a series of S&M Improved Muskrat knives (four series set) in 2008 of what little stock that Queen had in storage and he told me that there is not much if any left. Series III of the Schatt & Morgans series sets are made from old Winterbottom stock also.

Thanks for the excerpt from David Krauss's book about Winterbottom bone. I didn't realize my Muskrat was made from some of the last of the "original" stock. Mine came from Mr. Risner's 2008 series.

Would love to have all 4 in the set .........

Nice set of Rats ,hatback !!!!!!!!!!!!! I got some of that old winterbottom bone on this Queen folder_______she's in the "'Hospital"" with , Doctor Muskrat 'Man,giving her a complete physical,and cleaning____I'll post the after pictures,when I get her, back
