Schrade display case
Gentlemen...a question
I visited today a local hardware store in my neighborhood, and I found that the owner had a Schrade knife display case...wood "box" type, with a
glass cover. It looks like it was originally meant to hold/display about 12 or 15 knives. There are still a couple of stockman patterns in the display, and a small lockback. I asked the owner what he would sell the display case and remaining knives for. He'll be back to me in a day or two.
My "idea" was to buy the case and remaining knives, and then try and search out and buy the "missing" knives, so that I would end up with a complete Schrade display case, with all the original knife models.
Good idea?...Worth the time and effort? What do you guys think. The case is like mint condition, and would look good in my office/den... I could probably find all the "missing" knives pretty easily, between ebay, private sellers, other knife shops, etc. Opinions please?

jabberwocky ; I fell like you will not go wrong doing this. Schrade made real good knives that just asked to be used. If you take photos as you add to it. They will mean lots more to all of use and you too. I for one have many unused Schrade. I hope in like 5 or 10 years they will be worth more then. So as an investment, fun, learning and showing off you work. GO FOR IT.

Thanks for the supportive opinions, guys. Ithought it would be kind of a
cool, ongoing project, trying to find the "missing" knivesfor the display case. Now, all I have to do is keep hounding the owner/manager of the
store to give me a price and part with it. It's always amazing to me how,
when people find out something that they have, is "discontinued" or out of
production...even if it's something they never gave much thought to before...they suddenly think of it as "valuable"...I wonder what kind of price quote I get on this case...! I'll keep you posted.

Definitely worth doing, JW!
Fun, because you will be searching for the different knives that made up that display. There might be a couple that are harder to find than others, so that makes it like a treasure hunt, the thrill of the chase and all.
It's not going to break you (well, probably not). These knives, unless the display is super old, should still be somewhat readily available, so you can shop around for the nicest examples that can be found.
You will probably learn something about Schrade along the way. The company had a great and long history, there are lots of great stories to discover.
Good luck, and have fun.

I would go for it too, if the price is right and it would make a good project/conversation piece, grow in value also.
You might search eBay in the completed auctions for one and see what they are selling for there.
Most of the co-ops, hardware stores around here know what they got and try to jack up the price IMO.

Jabber... did you end up buying the display case?
Here is one I found at a flea market a few years ago. Four foot tall. It was being used to display beenie babies. After dispatching those foul little creatures with my big old Schrade BTO1 Forged survival knife, the owner accepted $25 for it.
I repainted the interior red, added some rope lighting beneath each shelve and then a little valence in front of the light to hide it. A new piano hinge, as the door was a bit droopy. Some casters beneath it to roll the sucker around, and then some more valence boards to hide those. Lights are controlled by a tiny remote RF control. It is not by any means a 'furniture grade' piece, but for back in the basement, where I have all my knife display cases, it works fine. And it was fun restoring it.
So don't feel you have to buy the first one you see, plenty of these things around and you can find them in the damnest places.
Regards,
Phil
