Did I get took?

Post by Mumbleypeg »

I picked this up at a flea market thinking it was a Remington Boy’s Knife with chain. I got it home, stuck it in a drawer thinking I’d research it and clean it before putting it with others, then forgot about it. (Yep, I’m getting old.) ::dang::  Found it today and after a little research, I’m not sure what it is. It’s a little over 3-3/8 inches but not quite 3-1/2. The stamps look okay, but I don’t see any pattern number (I noticed that when I bought it, but I’ve seen Remingtons without pattern numbers before.) Snappy with half-stops on both blades. I thought at first it is a R103CH, which my resources say is 3-1/2 inches. R23CH is 3-3/8 but has no cap bolster. But digging a little further, in an old Remington catalog reprint the pictures shown there of a R103CH show a different looking chain, and appears to maybe have a pinched bolster. ::shrug:: It’s a nice old knife but I’m not sure it’s what it represents itself to be. ::skeptic::

Some of you Remington collectors will probably know whether it’s authentic. But if not, what is it? ::shrug:: Any thoughts? I started to put this in the Remington collectors forum, but now I’m not even sure it’s a Remington! ::dang::

Hello Ken,
I'm definitely not the Remington expert you are looking for, but found this one on Worthpoint, and wondering if they would have made the R1063 pattern without a shield?

Thanks Kevin. That does look like mine, including the type of chain, and the description sounds right too. Remington made so many knives, with different shields, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they made some without shields. I’m no Remington expert though, so it could be wishful thinking. My references don’t show a R1063CH, but I’ve seen an old Remington print ad (for a different pattern) that says you could get a chain added by special order for an additional 10¢ so I guess it’s possible.

You’re making me feel a little better!

I am no expert either, but I agree with Knifeaholic. I see nothing that makes it look suspect.
The knife looks good, but not "too good to be true".

Thanks y’all! I thought it was good when I bought it, but when I started researching it and couldn’t find it in my references I started to get cold feet. When it comes to Remingtons I can get in over my head real quick!

I’m gonna go with R1063CH. ::handshake::
