Unfortunately I don’t have any before pictures but the knife was crusty and rusty. It was the first time ever I used PB Blast on a knife. Well I learned the hard way not to do that. It ended up melting the plastic scales. I never knew it does that. So I disassembled everything and cleaned it up with a fiber wheel and Dremal wire wheel. I used black walnut for the scales. I don’t have nickel pins so I used brass. Yes it’s visible in the bolsters but I don’t think it looks bad.

That's a tough lesson. But she looks great. Too bad you couldn't fit a Girl Scout shield.

Thank you. I’ve replaced scales on multiple knives with different types of wood and my favorite is probably black walnut. I was fortunate to get my hands on a decent amount of it so it ends being my go to scale material.

On a side note, if you want a powerful solvent that won’t destroy the parts, take a look at Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber.

It’s a an aerosol solvent that evaporates in a few seconds leaving the parts clean and dry. It’s made for cleaning guns without disassembly.

Birchwood Casey used to make a standard Gun Scrubber that would melt synthetic materials. Then they started making a “Synthetic Safe” variant. You could choose which one you wanted to buy.

But several years ago they stopped making the standard Gun Scrubber. Nowadays, all Gun Scrubber is safe for use on all materials.

It’s good stuff. You can smell the Ether (or whatever it is) in the solvent. I use it to flush out sticky or dirty pivots on my knives. Cleans em right up. Excellent product.

I'll have to pick some up and try it. I've used it in the past for guns but I never thought to use it for knives. Thanks for the info.

Nice clean-up (and save) on that one. The brass pins look fine, adds some class to the knife!

Thank you. I did it on another knife before and in my opinion it’s kinda like an accent piece. Eventually I’ll pick some nickel pins up.
