Opinions needed on L36 KG Western sheath knife

In 1911, H. N. Platts, was able to draw on his extensive friendships and family connections in the cutlery world to start Western States Cutlery and Manufacturing of Boulder Colorado. At first only a jobbing business, by 1920 construction and machinery purchases were underway to begin manufacture of knives. Through name changes--to Western States Cutlery Co. in 1953, then Western Cutlery Co. in 1956--and moves first across town and later to Longmont Colorado, the company stayed under the leadership of the Platt family until 1984. In that year, the company was sold to Coleman, becoming Coleman-Western. Eventually purchased by Camillus in 1991, Western continued until Camillus expired in 2007.

Opinions needed on L36 KG Western sheath knife

Post by 98src »

Opinions please on this Western L36 KG sheath knife. I know the sheath has been modified, but is the bottom part original? The catalog picture is from the Western 1941 catalog contained in the "The Knife Makers Who Went West book by Harvey Platts.

I don't believe the sheath is original to your nice knife.

Hey Brother, I picked up a L36KG - seller says it was his father's & that the sheath is original to this knife.
Western Cutlery always made changes to sheaths & knives over the years. However, your sheath looks oversized & most likely a substitute. I also have Harvey Platts book "The Knife Makers Who Went West and as you posted, It's in the 1941 catalog provided -
No picture of sheath is shown.
It's a beautiful knife indeed!

I have 3, all different styles over the years:
The L36 next to the "1941" L36KG - is also pre-1951.
The W36 I have is NOS; 1961-77 & pictured at bottom using the pics from the seller I purchased it from, that one is stored away -
I only carry/use the L36.
