Schrade Walden 209 Fish Knife

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Schrade Walden 209 Fish Knife

Post by woodwalker »

I've been researching this Schrade Walden Old Lunker Fish knife and have read it was made in 1972 and 1973 only. Does any one else have one? :)

I have had two and seen a number of others. Some have the fish on the shield and others say LUNKER on the shield. I think that I have also seen them without a shackle.

I have one of each. I can't say which year they each were sold. The sheath is from an Ulster fish knife.
And a picture of one that came with a sheath/pouch.

In eighteen years of collecting Schrades I have never seen that SCHRADE WALDEN shield on your knife. My example does have that same curved sheath. Some of the very early SW folding hunters had a curved sheath also, with embossed game scene.

Here is another picture I saved off the net of one with the sheath that some came with, (I guess)
It is my understanding that the name "Lunker" or "Ole' Lunker" came from a promotion from a retailer named Olsen.?? (see tang stamp pic) I don't believe that Schrade ever referred to the knives as that. I don't think. ?
I am just guessing that since these were only made and sold for two years, that the different shields represent one from each year?? Notice the different tang stamps.
I also came across one with a blank shield.
I only have the two in the first picture with the Ulster sheath and I used to have another one with the fish shield.

Interesting variations. I suspect some of such are "end of days" knives that the employees scrambled to cobble together out of the barrels bins, crates and floor sweepings the summer of 2004. I don't think they sold well back in the day and there was inventory of them still in the plant years later in various stages of discontent.
