Albino Deer

Post by PringleTree »

I was looking through my picture folder on my computer and found a couple of fond ones from 2018. My Mom lived with me the last several years of her life. This albino fellow was a frequent backyard visitor in 2018, and my mother loved to watch him. We give him the nickname Buck White.

Never seen an albino deer before. I wonder if
his color is a huge detriment in being hunted by
other animals.

Chris, that's a great lookin' buck!
When deer are mixed color like him, they are actually called piebald. A true albino should be all white with pink eyes and nose. The piebald whitetail can be all sorts of brown and white patterns, sometimes like an Appaloosa horse. There was an old piebald doe in our neck of the woods that was all white except for her head that was regular brown.
Thanks for sharing this special memory of your mother and Buck White with the forum!

You're welcome--it was nice to have the memory come flooding back. She loved this deer and the pileated woodpeckers that are plentiful here. Note the empty suet cages on the tree. I had trouble keeping them filled, the pileated woodpeckers were on them constantly. Thanks for the info about piebalds, which I did not know--learn something new every day.

I'm sorry I don't know that much about them. I have heard somewhere that wolves will kill an albino member of the pack--don't know how true that is, though. This buck always seemed to be with other deer, so they didn't appear to shun him in any way.

Here's a pileated woodpecker. Sometimes we would have four on the tree at one time. Sorry for the poor quality pic--shot through the window glass.

The deer looks like he's half Chalois cow, very cool catch.

We used to get several pileated here, but we haven't seen or heard but a couple all year.

Someone brought a piebald into the butcher shop I worked at about 50 years ago. It looked like a pinto pony. I would not shoot those.

I have only ever seen one solid white deer when I used to hunt on a regular basis. It was in 1979 in Grantville, Ga. It was a very small doe ,I thought it was a dog when I first spotted it.

I used to rock climb on a 50' outdoor climbing wall back in the olden times and there was a big 'ol pileated woodpecker that hung around there would land on the wall and do some pecking. He was a beautiful bird ::nod:: ..... ::hmm:: as I recall he looked a little different .... ::paranoid:: more like this;

I live about 100 yards or so from the Shenandoah River. We have loads of pileated here, many of them live in the trees along the river bank. I've always loved their calls--very loud and unusual.

Their calls aggravated me when I was a boy squirrel hunting. I no longer squirrel hunt, and love to watch them, but I still think they have an abrasive sound.😊

A very opinionated-sounding bird.

Pringle tree. Nice pics of the deer in your area . And cool story too. Thanks for sharing.
When we were kids Dad took us up Deer hunting with him , mainly to be the ones driving( walking ) the woods to kick deer to the standers. We kicked up a true Albino and it was the most beautiful site . He stood about 100 yards away and with the snow he was almost invisible. That got me hooked on whitetail deer . We’ve got an albino Buffalo at Irvine park in Chippewa falls . The Albino are considered sacred here in our nation and it’s a special event if you see one in the wild .
Thanks for helping to bring back some good memories with your post

Hi JP:
Great family story with your Dad. So cool--I'm sure that deer in the wild was a sight to behold.

Thanks for sharing.
