Case XX BULLDOG 5172 / user in the mail.

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case XX BULLDOG 5172 / user in the mail.

Post by MCM »

Just bought this today. Was advertised as a 65-69. But am not 100% sure.
Also, is it easy to find / replace the missing shield? Folks here have them FS?
Didn't pay top dollar, so am happy with the purchase.
Looks to have a nice full blade, no big cracks on the scales etc. .
Thanks

Asking about the year, as the Case XX USA stamp looks like 65-69, per the chart.
But also read 65 and earlier had 5172 on the back side of the blade.
Just curious on the year. Guessing 65-69 based on the show side stamp.

Based on reading what the forum's experts wrote here https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kn ... hp?t=81714 the only age period that matches is 1965 - 1966 or 1967 with its HAND MADE IN USA etch worn off the back side of the blade.

I'm assuming it's not one of the Case Clasics Jim Parker had Queen make in the late 1980s and 1990s.

And came back to this post and was going to add the photo. Thank you!
Can sort of see the Made in USA a bit here

You're lucky to have found a 5172 that was affordable enough to use. Other than on the internet I can't remember the last time I saw a Case Bulldog. I I bought a Rough Ryder full size bulldog with brown Micarta for about $18 but it's not the same as handling a Case.

The stag handles on that knife look very dry. You might want to consider rubbing some mineral oil on those.

Thanks Mike. Will have the knife in a few days. Have a new bottle I use on my Randall stag and Ivory.
You are right. It looks dry as a bone............ ::uc::

Does anyone here know where I can find the correct missing Case badge?
Thanks!

You can post a "Want Ad" on this site in the want ad section. You can also do an eBay search for specific Case shields and put it on a "Saved Searches" list so anytime one comes up, eBay will notify you.

You could also post on other knife forums as well. Along with your post, I would add a close-up photo of the specific shield you want so anyone that sees your post knows exactly what you're looking for.

Can’t hurt to contact Case and ask, but your knife had a pinned-on shield. Pins are still visible. Most likely if Case has a replacement they will replace it with a glued-on shield. Other than a few special builds, Case stopped pinning shields years ago. If you care, be sure to ask.

Thanks, I sent in the online repair request form with photos, to see if it can be done at Case.
If they only do glue on these days I will pass. And wait to find the orig. pinned style shield. ::tu::

The knife came in today. Better cond than expected. Mineral oil on the stag and a bit of light cleaning.
And that was all it needed.Thing is rock solid.

Case is unable to help with the shield on the Bulldog.
Also asked about an older / old Small Stockman not opening all the way. No dice on either.
So will look for a pinned shield on my own.................
