BUCK USA Compadre 104 Knife Review

Hoyt Buck produced the first Buck Knife in 1902. Hoyt and his son Al moved to San Diego and set up shop as H.H. Buck & Son in 1947. Al Buck revolutionized the knife industry in 1964 with the infamous Model 110 Folding Hunter. The company's innovative history and attention to quality have made for many great collectible knives.

BUCK USA Compadre 104 Knife Review

Post by TripleF »

Have you ever wondered how a knife held up, and then years later an actual review was completed? Same.

Well, three years ago (actually in June of 2021), I purchased this USA made fixed blade BUCK Compadre. I received an email from BUCK Knives (I am subscribed to their email blasts, and had purchased a hat from them through this marketing angle) offering a FREE Truckers hat with a $100 or more purchase. That was the price of the knife then….and I bit, hook, line and sinker!!

A couple days ago I received an email from BUCK alerting me to the “MUST HAVE CAMP KNIFE”. Of course I clicked to see what their statement was leading to and sure enough the email was referring to the BUCK COMPADRE stating “The Benefit of being a brute!”

That inspired this review.

Right up front I’ll say this, this knife is a breast, or as they say “a brute”. I am a huge fan. And three years later, I’ve never sharpened it. I have honed it on my sharpening rod, but nothing other than that.

I’ve used and carried it a number of times. The boys I take vamping have used it. It’s definitely been around the block over the past 3 years! We’ve cut wood, struck ferro rods to start fires, and cut food..

It’s hefty. Fills the hand. Obviously the knife is durable as indicated by the time from purchase.

What don’t I like? Two things:
The brand name is gone, and the sheath is a little wimpy in my opinion. The handle rides forward and the blade rises up, while in the sheath. So, when carried on your belt it doesn’t rest straight up and down.

It is an excellent knife, excellent!! No questions. Worth every penny and then some. I would definitely buy it again!!

I've got an early version when the blades were red and the scales were some sort of wood. I like the red because the knife stands out if dropped and the wood scales are very grippy. The D2 sharpens easily and the BOS heat treat keeps even the D2 sharp for a lot of use.

I agree, the sheath was not Buck's best effort. I'm a hack when it comes to leather work, but I may take a crack at making two sheaths for it, one strong side vertical and the other a cross draw horizontal.

Good review and great pics. You have used the knife for a long
time so you know what you are talking about.

Good review. I have one as well. I've said this many times before, that Buck doesn't get the respect it deserves. I think Buck's are considered to be on the lower end of the spectrum when compared to the higher priced knives, but they can hold their own when need be.

I can’t see any reason to buy cheaper knives than Buck, they are usually very affordable and very high quality. You can spend more but you won’t get more quality. If you spend less, you get a lot less quality.

I have a flat ground 104, with Burlap handles, I did a lot of work to it and it became a fine user. The blade was rough as a courderoy road so I took the time to hand finish it.

I would take that knife into the wilderness any day of the week. ::nod::
