Here’s a contraption not seen very often nowadays. It’s an old belt lacer, used for splicing belts (typically leather belts). This one is for splicing belts used for equipment like hay balers, trashing machines,etc. They were made in different configurations, for different types of belts - conveyer belts, hay-baler belts, etc.

On this one the top part with the handles on it is hinged. Tilt it back, load the metal staples/loops into the top piece. Lay the two pieces of belt into the bottom tray. Using the handles pull the top forward toward you (using the handles) which will “lace”, aka staple them together. The result is similar to the example below, which is wider than what this tool was made for (and not leather) but you can get an idea of the result.

What a great picture. Growing up on the farm, dad and I would belt up the DC Case propane tractor with the wide flat pulley to the feed grinder. I can recall a couple of times he did a repair on the belt splice with pieces of wire. Now days the PTO drive has replaced this. And when dad would drive the tractor up to belt up I always had to remember to turn the belt a half twist to get the correct directional rotation for the feed grinder when I slipped the belt on the pulley.

I didn't mean to make light of your o p, and I fully agree with your statement, that is not for me.

It reminded me also of a few years ago when we were on vacation somewhwere in the Caribbean. Near our resort, there was a guy (no Spring chicken) who was charging $2 for a coconut. If you purchased, he would scramble barefoot, machete in hand, fairly high up into the trees and retrieve a coconut, no harness. Now that would be a tough way to earn tourist $'s.

Amazing to watch a pro at work. If they know what they're doing, they are very precious with where the cuttings fall.
We had a big cottonwood by our church. They took it down and only once did they ever so lightly brush the church.

Philco, your post and Bro Steve's reminds me that our insurance company, Florida Farm Beureau that we've been with for before we were married, sent us a nice note saying, " your homeowners insurance will be canceled on 6-1-2024 due to overhanging limbs and branches", that's the 1st day of hurricane season. Our home is nestled under very large Live Oak that made it through Cat 5 Hurricane Michael.
We then got a nice note from the local office saying, "let us know when you get the tree taken down, homeowners will be continued."
We'll be showing some pictures in the coming days or weeks of a big tree removal.

Philco, your post and Bro Steve's reminds me that our insurance company, Florida Farm Beureau that we've been with for before we were married, sent us a nice note saying, " your homeowners insurance will be canceled on 6-1-2024 due to overhanging limbs and branches", that's the 1st day of hurricane season. Our home is nestled under very large Live Oak that made it through Cat 5 Hurricane Michael.
We then got a nice note from the local office saying, "let us know when you get the tree taken down, homeowners will be continued."

A tree like that is worth a lot of money! Ask what limbs are of concern, and if an arborist removes those will they insure it? Also if it made it through Michael why do they think it won’t survive another? There are thousands of big Live Oaks that are 200-300 years old (or more) and have survived hurricane after hurricane. Before I took the tree down I’d politely ask to speak to the underwriter making that decision. A certified arborist’s opinion might help. JMO

Big homer, looks like y'all found that big "Junk Pile". We enjoyed going there several years ago and were just simply amazed at the size of some of that old equipment and how it just sits right out in the open like it has for so many long years, no fences. Somehow it has escaped the usual severe vandalism the seems to mark so many of the old treasures like this. On the other side of the state, just south of Sanford there was a giant hollow Bald Cypress that was spared because it was hollow. It was named the "Senator" it was living at the time Jesus walked the earth. The loggers left it because of it being hollow and it was still alive until some druggie woman burned it down. We used to stop there when we went from old Orlando to Sanford to visit cousins back in the early '50s.
