Shark Tooth Handle Identification

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Shark Tooth Handle Identification

Post by Kentucky Still »

Hello Case experts. Can someone tell me what kind of handle this is? I know it’s not pakkawood, obviously not stag, or curly maple. Sorry for the very poor quality of photo. Thanks for any input.

It’s Pakkawood. Just didn’t take the dye deeply. Pakkawood is a laminated wood (basically a type of plywood). When sanded/hafted its layers are exposed. Layers where the dye didn’t penetrate are lighter colored.

Mumbleypeg, wow, that looks nothing like the pakkawood handles on my other knives. Does this color variation add or subtract from value?

That’s a subjective opinion, in the eye of the beholder. Personally I like it! ::tu::

I prefer to buy knives in person, so I can examine them, check the “walk-and-talk”, fit and finish, and the aesthetics. If I was shopping for a Shark, that one would’ve come home with me.

Definitely pakawood. My preference would be for a darker overall color, but that one certainly isn’t some ugly duckling.

If a knife handle is relatively flat you only see one layer. This greatly changes the appearance.

These laminated handles remind me of topographical maps.
