Case Corelone
Case Corelone
Here is Case Abalone Corelon Premier Edition 1 of 500. Who can tell me about it; and this isn't those dreaded Celluloid scales are they?

Re: Case Corelone
No not celluloid. Corelon is an acrylic plastic, the name is a registered trademark of Frost Cutlery. The handle covers were affixed to the knife with glue, by a Frost Cutlery affiliate. See here for more details

So, contrary to the title of this thread, it’s Frost Corelon, on a Case knife.

Thanks Ken - thought I may have had to go stick it in a tree somewhere in case it needed to "pass gas". Well, that is good news.

Did not even the German celluloid-handled knives finally wink out? Are any celluloid-handled knives being made any more anywhere?

A year or two ago SMKW introduced a line of Rough Ryder celluloid tortoise shell traditional pocket knives. They still have them. While most Rough Ryders have 440A stainless blades this series is one of the two that I'm aware of that have 440B. In recent years and maybe currently SMKW has also sold Chinese made Marbles knives with the same handle material. Their Marbles and Rough Ryders often appear to have been stamped out with the same dies and jigged with the same program.tongueriver wrote: ↑Fri Jan 19, 2024 12:44 am [...] Are any celluloid-handled knives being made any more anywhere?

Re: Case Corelone
Humans, both individuals and huge corporate entities tend to use words very carelessly; I seriously doubt those knives have actual celluloid covers. There is no reason to do so and many reasons not to do so. Many modern plastics are readily available and can duplicate any colors that the old celluloid process exhibited. Celluloid is an obsolete anachronism, and the word, as I say, is probably inappropriately used for something quite different.

Re: Case Corelone
On their introduction the plastic in Rough Ryder and Marbles tortoise shell handles was advertised as celluloid on SMKW website and in mailed catalogs. It was quite a while before it was renamed the less specific name synthetic. While most of the plastic handles that you can see into in those product lines are advertised as acrylic, calling the tortoise shell synthetic is not saying it is not celluloid. My guess is SMKW quit using the specifc name because the bad press celluloid was receiving here and elsewhere was hurting sales.
You could buy a RR acrylic handle knife and a RR tortoise shell handle knife then pry off a side of each and compare how they burn. At end of the year sale prices that could have been done for about $25.

That would be interesting.
