Otter? Solingen Fixed - Boy Scout in Etch

Post by Reverand »

This beautiful hunting knife is only marked "Solingen", above an animal that I believe to be an otter. I have found a few other knives here on AAPK with the same mark, but I have not seen another knife like this one. I will be as detailed as I can in this description:
IMG_9723.jpeg
I do not know that this is an official Boy Scout knife, but it has a detailed deep etch of a Boy Scout hiking in the forest.

IMG_9724.jpeg
The knife is 8-7/8" long overall (5-1/8" blade), and includes a sheath that appears original to the knife. There is a beautiful copper plating on the blade and on the pommel. There are marks of wear and use on both, but to me they do not detract from the beauty of this unique knife.
IMG_9725.jpeg
I have not attempted to make any repairs to this knife, I only cleaned it. It had apparently been stored in the sheath for years. I gently cleaned it with 0000 steel wool and oil, and used Case paste on the blade. Then I cleaned the sheath with saddle soap and rubbed in a leather conditioner.
The pommel wiggles slightly, but I have not attempted to tighten it. The leather discs and spacers on the handle are firm and tight, and in good condition.
All of the stitches have fallen out of the sheath, but the rivets are holding fine. The leather of the sheath was very dry, but has no cracks or tears. It feels supple now after conditioning it.
The blade of the knife is dull.
If the buyer wants, I will sharpen the knife before shipping, and/or re-stitch the sheath. Just let me know upon purchase.

Asking $75 with shipping included to the contiguous 48 states. Others can contact me and we will discuss shipping costs.
I accept cash, money order, Paypal, Venmo, and Zelle. I may accept a personal check from long-standing members of AAPK.
As always, hit me up with offers or trades!

Rev, that critter looks more like a seal than an otter. At least the otters in Florida have long tails. ::shrug::

I think the ricasso stamp is a sea lion. That’s not a Boy Scout in the etch. Looks like it’s a hiker in traditional iconic Bavarian attire. See below for examples.

Nice knife though!

I agree about the animal on the tang stamp looking like a seal. I searched around and here is the closest thing that I found:

viewtopic.php?p=777679&hilit=Solingen+seal#p777679

I might have misread, but I thought one person on the thread had identified it as an otter instead (there is a link inside that thread, as well, and I forgot which thread). So it is quite likely that it is a seal.

As far as the etch...yeah, I could see that being a Bavarian hiker. Right now I am still holding out hopes of it being a Boy Scout (which is more within my wheelhouse).
Thanks for the comments!

Bro Ken, I'll have to disagree about the Bavarian attire and lean heavily toward it being a Boy Scout.
I noticed some of the detail of the figure on the blade, he has a scarf/neckerchief, a campaign cover (hat to non-Marines) and there are a couple of tents in the background. The socks and pockets on the shirt conform to the scout uniform description. Either way it's an interesting knife that the Rev has shared with us. ::tu::

I noticed this knife yesterday and thought about a member of our church who is a Scout leader. I'm quite impressed with the operation of the troop that is under the umbrella of our local church. Plenty of safeguards in place to insure the leadership is what it should be and not what the courts dictate. I didn't make it very far in the Scouts, a Cub Scout until I was old enough to join the 4-H Club.

Phil, you could be right about it being a Scout. But I discounted that largely based on the pointed hat. I have one of those official BSA “campaign” hats myself - the crown is more rounded instead of pointed, which was a factor in my decision. Being an etch from an artists rendering though, I should give it some artistic license. I also didn’t notice what could be tents in the background which you point out. Either way it’s a nice knife!

BTW I have been directly involved with the Scouts for most of my life. I was a scout as a youngster, then a Scout adult leader. I am currently a volunteer serving as a Commissioner mentoring the leaders of two Cub Scout packs and two Scouts BSA units. Despite the sensationalist negative media coverage of the past few years, Scouting’s program still teaches youth the same character-building moral and leadership values that were taught when I was a youth member over 60 years ago. The scout oath, promise, and law have not changed. Congratulations to your church for sponsoring Scouting. I’m encouraged to know you are paying attention and are impressed. ::tu::

Looks like the Scout / hiker is carrying a spear (not a hiking staff) in his left hand. Another oddball detail.

That would be a Gebrüder "Lützenkirchen" in Solingen...one of their tang stamps is the Seal ( Seehund) ...registered in 1922...they made razors, WW2 daggers and hunting knives...company went out of business about after 1938/39
