Can I get some opinion’s please?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Can I get some opinion’s please?

Post by Esh »

I have the opportunity to purchase this knife. Anyone familiar with it? I have a small stag collection and thinking this would be a nice addition.

If you're comfortable with the price, it would make a nice addition to your stag colection.

If you're asking us, that means you yourself are not sure. So what are your concerns?

If you can afford it, get it. A very beautiful knife.

I agree with all the replies posted. But, like Mike (XX Case XX), I'm curious why you're asking?? ::shrug::

Just wondering about the rarity of this particular knife. Can’t find much info on it. Thanks

If you like it and can afford it, go for it! According to information on knifedb.com the knife was made in 2003 in 2 versions, one with serialization and scrolled bolsters, and a non-serialized non-scrolled version. It was offered again in 2004, apparently only in a non-serialized non-scrolled version. All were SFO’s for Shepherd Hills Cutlery. Here’s the knifedb.com description of the 2004 version.
Rat Trapper with stag handles and a single oval "CASE _ XX" recessed letter shield. Quantity varies from 500 to 1000 depending on the stag availability. This variation has plain bolsters and no serial number. The rat trapper is like the early trappers with longer handles and shorter bolsters (the first models), hence the zero is used in front of the model number to indicate this variation. Shown in 2004 Shepherd Hills catalog and described as a Shepherd Hills Exclusive.
You ask “is it rare?” IMHO “rare” is in the eye of the beholder. If you believe a “limited edition” made-to-be-rare collectable is “rare”, then it may be. It’s not a made-in-1920-to-be-carried-and-used-and-has-survived-over-100-years rare. JMO

It's a 2003 pattern 54 with engraved bolsters--which is not particularly rare--but the shield and blade etch are somewhat uncommon, possibly used on only a few different patterns made that year. I have the smaller mini-trapper version, 5207, with the same features minus the engraved bolsters. My 07 was made in 2004.

My opinion is that if it's being offered for a reasonable price that you can afford, you should definitely get it to add to your stag collection. ::nod::
