"World Bee Day" 2023

In recognition and celebration of "World Bee Day" Today, Saturday May 20, 2023 I am sharing Anna's interest in her Bee Keeping and my small collection related to my collection of knives with pictures and engraved Bees on the handles.

Bees are a vital part of our ecosystem and today is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the essential role bees and other pollintors play in keeping people and our planet healthy.

As Anna's Bee colony grew she had to add more 'State-Of-The-Art' Beehives and a Bee protective outfit. (Worn below)

The Beehive below was Anna's first home-made Beehive from many years ago, she placed it high in a tree in our local Lake/Park, secluded from foot traffic. After installing her first Beehive, she would visit it on a daily walk, (No Bees) , Than on the seventh day, when she returned home, she was sooo excited and happy , like a little girl on Christmas morning. Anna took me to her secluded Beehive to share her new family with me. It's still there and has hundreds of happy occupants.

The below pictured Bee handled knives have been in my collection for a few years, before Anna was even interested in Bee's.

Nice Yello Jackets. Love the shields.

I'm alergic to Wasp stings, however, on rare occasions one of Anna's Bee's will sting me, no reaction. I keep my distance.

The wood on the above "Otter Beemaster knife" came in three wood selections. Plum tree, Pearl wood and Sea buckthorn, I chose the Sea buckthorn wood for its beauty. The beemaster was only available with a rustproof stainless steel 1.4034 blade. Plates, bolsters and rivets are made of brass.
3 & 1/2" blade. 4 & 1/8" handle. Overall length is 7 & 5/8" open. I like 'Half stops' unfortunately, no 'Half stops' on Otter slipjoints .

Sea buckthorn wood is a very tight wood grain and would be excellent for wood inlay projects. The tree's are commonly found in Asia and Europe.
Parts of the sea buckthorn tree have long been used in herbal medicine and cosmetics. The tree is thought to have medicinal properties, leading many people to use sea buckthorn in interesting ways, including jams, pies, and drinks.

Available in supplement form, sea buckthorn extract contains various essential fatty acids and antioxidants (including vitamin C, vitamin E).
Many Sea buckthorn products can be found within secondary markets, like Amazon.
Unfortunately, I've never seen it used on any other knife handles.
I paid around $65.00 for the Otter Beemaster at Bladehq, to include tax and shipping a couple years ago.

I liked the Otter Beemaster so much that I purchased three other Otter knives. Pictured below.

The quality of Otter knives are excellent, made in Solingen Germany. Almost on par with 'Jack Wolf' knives which came out last year.

"Speaking of 'Jack Wolf' knives, I will soon post the 'Jack Wolf' knives I have, American owned company, made in China and the finest most perfect slipjoint knives that can be purchased. However Jack Wolf knives are pricey, pushing up to $300.00 each." But worth every penny!

Beautiful selection of knives, well sourced. And i like the Jack Wolf knives, they look very well made. And the fact that they sell out quickly says a lot about them. I think there is a Jack wolf thread, but i could be mistaken.

I used to visit an old bee guy years ago, he had OVER 300 hives at 1 time. He had a lot of bee jokes. only recall the 2.' its the only thing you can do where you steal from the neighbors and no one cares(pollen)".

Old Folder, would you please explain the workings of Anna's bee hive shown in the OP? It's unusual shape puzzles me. We are familiar with the normal, stackable hives.

Hello Treefarner.
Anna made her first Beehive many years ago when she first became interested in Bee keeping. As you can see in my above OP, It was a very basic home-made setup, consisting of a 3 gallon empty plant container with a secured formaldehyde free cover and a bee entry hole with a little bee landing porch. With formaldehyde adhesives free incerts.
The 'Blister appearance' on the front of the hive (below) is actually Beeswax melted and dropped on the cover to initially attract the Bees. It was effective and did the job.

Later, as her research and knowledge of Beekeeping progressed, so did her possession of State-of-The-Art stackable hives, as you are familiar with.
Anna has three of the below pictured large stackable Beehives now. They are well made and very heavy. They come un-assembled to your home.

Only on certain times of the year you can also order a Bee family on the internet, to include a 'Queen-bee' that will be mailed to you. She has never had to do that, so, I have no information on mail ordered bees.

I totally forgot to add my Fight'n Rooster 'Bumble Bee' stockman knife to my OP that I purchased from Carl Risner in 1988. It is number 46 of 300.
The 'Bumble Bee' knife is known for its self destruction from unstable celluloid. I'm sure that not many of the initial 300 have survived. I keep a close eye on my 'Bumble Bee' and keep it segregated from all other knives.

This is a very cool topic, Dan. Great group of knives with an unusual focus!

I have a few blueberry bushes and dwarf fruit trees in my suburban garden. Twenty years ago my trees were pollinated by honey bees. Then came the colony collapse disorder, and honey bees disappeared from my property. Fortunately, bumblebees and other pollinators have done a good job. Even today, it is unusual for me to see a honey bee on my property. Back in the old days they could be quite annoying when they swarmed, but unfortunately that is no longer a problem.

I doubt I'll try beekeeping anytime soon, but I like the bee-themed knives!
