I have bluebonnets here also. Interesting what you said about them beginning to fade. The bluebonnets in the pasture on the north side of our driveway still look good, but the ones in the pasture on the south side are fading. Farther south, I guess.

The Queen of the Hop!
I stumbled across this old Penn reel at the flea market. I didn't know what it was, I just knew I didn't have an 80.
Penn didn't make this reel for very long. They stopped making them in 1937 I believe.
It's in decent used condition. I took it apart and cleaned up the inside and spruced up the out side.
I think they hold some value, not that I will sell it.
Thanks for looking.

Thank you Garry and Ken, and Tom.
Ken, reels like this were used successfully by many fishermen for many years.
You developed an educated thumb and kept out of the way of the reel handle which would educate you quite quickly.

Those are pretty nice beginnings, Ken, I wonder if your kit looked something like this?Mumbleypeg wrote: ↑Wed Apr 19, 2023 2:46 am a hand-me-down South Bend bait casting reel (and a steel rod!) my grandfather gave me.
Ken
Old square steel rod with two agate guides and a tip and the finest kind of early bait caster.
Of course there were much earlier reels.

Joe, I can’t recall what the handle on the rod was made of, or what brand it was. I just remember it was steel with steel eyes. My grandfather had given it to my dad, who eventually replaced it with a new Shakespeare closed-face spinning reel and fiberglass rod combo. Dad gave the old steel rod and reel back to grandpa, who in turn immediately gave it to me.
I was in the 3rd or 4th grade at the time. I was in hog Heaven.

More wildflowers in the ranch pastures. If anyone recognizes the yellow wildflowers please advise. They’re small, about the diameter of a nickel.
But they are many!

My mom was a wildflower guru but she’s been gone almost 20 years now. Most of what little I know about wildflowers, I learned from her.
Steve, golden groundsel is a good guess. I looked it up though and it says it grows in forests, swamps, ravines, or riparian areas. What I have is in an open pasture.

Ken,
The Bride is convinced that the yellow flowers are dandelions. I expressed my doubts to her but to no avail.
If they grow the little fuzzy seed balls, let me know so I can humble myself before her.

These have more daisy-like flowers than dandelions. I have a plentiful crop of dandelions (mostly in my yard

Re: Pictures of Miscellaneous Stuff & Things
Thanks JP. It may be some variety of coreopsis (aka tickseed). I thought of that as it's a fairly common wildflower in these parts. However if so upon close examination it's different than that pictured on the website you linked. Note the rounded versus scalloped edges of the flowers.
The more I look the more I'm thinking Steve's diagnosis of groundsel may be correct. Or as your wife says it may be a variety of coreopsis. (Since I've already disagreed with one woman (Ray's wife) on this, I'm treading lightly)!

I found a swarm of honey bees in one of my peach trees today. Somewhere in the midst of that there’s a queen. I looked or her for about 10 minutes but couldn’t locate her. Saw a number of scouts coming and going. Not a big one as swarms go, but thought y’all might be interested so I’m sharing it here. Hopefully they’ll find a suitable location and move on - it’s supposed to rain here tomorrow which could be a problem for them if they haven’t located a new home by then.

I took this pic several years ago when I visited the museum with my granddaughter
