The knife is a complete, total absolute fake. The 80 pattern “carpenter’s whittler” wasn’t made prior to the Tested era at earliest, and there is some debate about even that. Most sources say it first appeared in the CASE XX era (there’s a thread here somewhere debating exactly that). The knife is stamped Case Brothers, but it has “Case Tested XX” in a circle, which was first used by W.R. Case & Sons after they acquired rights to the Tested XX trademark. To my knowledge the mark in a circle or oval was not used by Case Brothers. (Case Brothers knives often have XX stamped on the master blade, TESTED XX stamped in a straight line, or both, but not within a circle). Last but not least when the 80 pattern was made it was only offered in bone, not stag. At least not until they did a stag version post-1980.

Good points,Ken. I would like to add that a true vintage Case Bros Knife will never have a shield that says CASE.

Webster’s defines “replica” as “a copy exact in all details of an original item”. The key words being “exact copy”, and “original item”. There was never an authentic original pattern 5380 made by Case Brothers. Therefore the knife cannot be a replica. It is a counterfeit designed to fool or cheat the buyer, pure and simple.

Apparently that sale didn’t consummate - it’s re-listed. Here’s a screen shot I took minutes ago. It’s currently at $102.50, which IMHO is at least twice what it is worth as a user. It has zero collector value.
