Uwharrie National Forest around Troy, NC. Lots and lots of trails from maybe a half mile long to 25 miles or so. We generally do 4-5 miles on a hike which takes us, with stops, about 2.5 to 3 hours. Unintentionally went 8 miles one day, but that was a bit much, at least for an afternoon walk.

What is that thing?

It is a Gila monster. The Gila monster is one of only a handful of venomous lizards in the world. They are native to southern Arizona, but very hard to find or see as they spend a lot of their life underground. They can store food in their big fat tail and after eating a nest full bird eggs they can hang out in thei den for months. They can live for 20-30 years.
