There's no set date, but some Scout Troops conduct a ceremony of 14 June, Flag Day. Others (Scout Troops and VFWs and AmLeg Posts) will conduct one as necessary when they accumulate a significant number of them from civilians who have worn flags that need disposal. My Legion Post conducts a ceremony about every 6 months.

The proper manner by which to dispose of worn flags is a respectful ceremony during which the burned.

In general, the flags are folded correctly, a chaplain says a prayer of two, the color guard dips a folded flag in kerosene or diesel, and then place in the large fire in the burn pit. (Large so that the flag/flags burn quickly and completely.) The participants either salute and recite the Pledge of Allgiance or all stand in silence while the flags burn. One variation is the white stars are curt out of the blue field and the stars presented to veterans along with a note that states that their service willnever be forgotten. The ashes are subsequently buried.

The rebuilt carburetor from my grandfather’s Model A Ford.

I’ve been negligent - the Model A hasn’t been run in a couple of years (since before COVID). A friend asked if I was going to drive it in the Independence Day parade so decided I’d better get it ready. So a couple of weeks ago I started it. Which led to a series of problems to be resolved. It’s amazing what can happen when a car hasn’t been run for an extended time period. After many hours of work and enough spent on parts to have bought several pocket knives I think it’s finally ready to go. This carburetor rebuild has been an adventure!

Been teasing the wife about letting her ride in the rumble seat during the parade!

Nice work on the carb, Ken.

I used to have a '71 MGB and a 58 Porsche 356A. The MGB had twin SU carbs and the Porsche had twin Zenith carbs. To balance them, I had a Gunson Colortune. It's little glass see-through spark plug adapter, that allowed you to "see" into the cylinder as it fired. The process was to adjust the richness of the carbs while the car was running until the fire in the cylinder just turned from yellow to blue, if I remember. Pretty neat little tool, and you could really get the carbs synched up nicely. When the carbs were synced, It made a huge difference in how well they ran.


The last carb I worked on was my power washer with a Honda engine. I let it sit a little too long and the carb gummed up. I found a brand new carb for about $10 on Amazon. Bolted it on and it fired right up.

Not quite so inexpensive on a 90 year old car. Rebuilding this one was an adventure. The Model A Ford is a true marvel in its simplicity. For those not familiar, the Model A has a both a hand and a foot throttle, a manual choke and fuel mixture adjustment rod, and a spark advance lever, all in the driver compartment. So by adjusting them while listening to it run and “feeling” the running engine’s vibration, the driver can literally tune the engine to run at optimum performance. If those don’t do the trick there are easily accessible adjustment screws on the carburetor itself.

“Mr. Goodwrench” and his computers may know how to tune a modern day car, but I for sure can’t.

While on my way to visit Boatright Blade Works I saw this epic old barn and the patriotic round bale wraps

Such a shame that wonderful old barn has deteriorated. There was one with a similar roof line but probably smaller a few miles from our place. It had stalls inside that were built for teams, two horses or mules per stall, and set up so they could be fed hay and grain from the loft and hallway outside the stalls. Great history lesson and look into how people lived 100+ years ago. But recently a housing developer bought the place and bulldozed the barn, old house and every tree on the place.

Cudgee, my best friend is a manager at a feed store. The owner of the Feed Stores raises hogs and feeds them with broken sacks of feed that he can't sell. Once a year he slaughters some of the hogs and gives 3 or 4 boxes of pork to each his employees. My buddy couldn't get all the meat into his freezers, so he bought a box over and put it in my freezer, and told us to "eat all we want", and that they couldn't even eat all they got last year. Sure is good! And with meat prices the way they are, a very welcome gift.
