Price Guide

Post by SFC ADP »

I originally came across AAPK because I had an Idea I began to explore. I had an idea of making an online Price guide. So after doing alot of searching I hit AAPK and saw he had a Case on-line guide.
The idea I had would be a subscription service, as I was looking at the cost of buying updated Price guides every year. And some price guides are a pain to use.
So lets say if you had a subscription service and charged $10.00 a year. Last Price Guide I bought cost $17.95, So I would pay into a Subscription service that was updated. So if I buy another one for 2006, I figure another $17-$20 will be spent, and another book on the book shelf. (To Be Honest, I would probably do both, have an on-line subscription and still buy the book!)
One thing I like to do is Compare prices as well, I have an old 1984 Price Guide, so my idea was to maybe have a paticular knife, show price in 1984/1994/2004/present... Then it would show the % of Increase every year if any.
I also thought of showing E-Bay Avg price, which would require some time and effort, or assistance from the site members, when a paticular knife closes auction what did it sell for?
I actually keep a note book, on knives I am interested in, and track this information.
So Basically it is an on-line Pocket Guide, that goes Beyond Case. My idea was to have searches based on Pattern Number, Name Brand, Style of Knife. Looking at how much data it would take, it would be alot of reading and a huge project. At this time, I lack the Knowledge on how to built such a site, and I lack the time being in the Military. So I am sharing this idea and who knows maybe it can be done.
I would also like to see an automatic RBR Scales on-line. I think it would help alot of people figuring out the Values of knives.
Only Legal aspects I could see as an issue, is the data used would come from alot of other price guides, so not sure if there is Copyright issues there or not.
Just wanted to throw some of those ideas out there, if you want more in-depth info, just shoot me a PM.

Hi Adam,

I've been tossing around similar ideas myself. I do think it would be a copyright infringement if you used prices directly from past price guides without permission from the author.

The only thing I've been doing with the current price guide on AAPK is logging actual prices paid for knives into a database and then making the data available to everyone via a program that pulls the data and displays it on a web page. If I can find the time, I have plans to expand it beyond Case, and it would be really easy to set up. If I ever get caught up (I don't know if that will ever happen), maybe we can collaborate on something. Any good computer programer could set something up pretty easily where you would just have to plug in some data that would go into a database and then make the data accessible to display on a webpage when called out by patttern name, year, manufacturer or whatever.
