Some New Hudson Valley Additions

Picked up a few new ones recently from some well known Hudson Valley cutleries, both old and new. First one's a Wallkill River Works barehead jack, in unused condition, and in great shape save for some spotting. Has the classic NYK bone, which you don't see too often on the Wallkills.
Next is a Schrade Walden 804, complete with the etch! This one's also in unused condition, but also came with some spots and a pretty good deal of rust on the exterior of the backspring on master blade side. Proper storage wasn't the previous owner's strong point, although it seems it may have been forgotten in some dingy storeroom from the looks of it.
Next up is a brand new Canal Street half moonpie trapper with stag handles and 14-4 CrMo blade. VERY smooth action, and slippery in the pocket as well. I love the smooth finish on this one with nary a sharp corner. ( You'll have to pardon me for not wiping the oil off the tangs )

Nice additions Eric, I do like the Walkill River Works knife jigged bone, the 804 is a sweet knife to add to the Schrade collection. The Stag CSC knife will be a winner for them if the Schrade 194OT is anything to go by.

Don, yes it's a stout knife, actually a split spring whittler, the pattern was a very popular one. It started out as a "Carpenters Whittler" with Schrade Cut Co, and carried right through Schrade Walden until I believe 1973, at which point it had delrin handles. I believe the peachseed bone handles ended in the late fifties, very early sixties.

Eric you scored some real killers there! The Walkill is a special piece, and the Whittler is a great example of the breed.

Thanks! Actually they're off Ebay, turns out the seller lives about ten minutes from me. No, he didn't have any other knives ( It was the first thing I asked him! ). The Canal Street is from AG Russell.

Very Very nice Eric! I would love to find a Schrade like that. Those vintage knives did not stray too far from their birthplace. Here's a pic of my Wallkill to show you what yours would look like if it had been used.

Not sure if the Co. O. Knife company is Cooperative Knife Co. There are those that think it might be County Orange Knife Co??? I thought it would get more comments than it has. Waiting for LT. I also thought the Warwick Knife Co knife would get more comments. They are rare and hard to find in any condition.

The Warwick looks like it's Schrade-made, Mike, but I see in Goins they were a factory. Then of course, the longer you look at these things, the more you realize there was a lot of interbreeding.
It's in nice shape, like all your knives!

Thanks for the kind words about my knives and fro all the people that have posted theirs. They are all great!! I have an old picture of the cutlers outside the Warwick knife co building also. Now all I need is a box and or billhead!!! Like they will be easy to find.

Eric, the 804 with etch is one I keep looking for. Waynorth has one of those too. You must have picked that one off before I saw it. Anyway, I love the 804, here are three I have, the 8041 Schrade Heritage, an 1985 revival knive, in smooth brown bone, a Schrade Walden delrin version, and an old bone stag, with no etch. The old one hasn't been used much, has a little patina going on. The sabre ground blades were really cool on this carpenter or mechanics knife.

Mike, I believe I need some confirmation on this as I'm not 100% correct, but I believe the Co.O Knife Company (Walden Cooperative Knife Co.) was the infant Walden Knife Co , if I'm not mistaken it was formed by the disgruntled employees from NYK who were invovled in the famous baseball dispute.I believe they only used that stamp for about three years, and needless to say it is HIGH on my list of wish knives, especially with an etch!!
There was another, super rare Cooperative knife made by what would become Ulster Knife, but I believe that one is stamped as Ellenville, and not Walden. I believe it also bears the Letters Co.Op.
The Warwick stamped knives are also rare mainly because they were so involved with doing contract knives that they rarely had a chance to stamp their own. I don't recall off the top of my head who their main customers were, but it WAS a major one like Shapleigh.

Thanks Eric, I just looked in Goins' and he has Walden CO. O Knife Co. to be between 1870-1874. I think you are right about this one not being from the Ellenville Company. I did not know that it was that old a knife. It was an ebay find for very cheap money.

Warwick I think made a large amount of knives for Belnap Hardware according to Goins'

I might have posted the Wardlow Salesman's knife on the site before but it goes good with this group I think.
