I need the Schrade Fixed blade SX23 Badger made in Ireland to complete a display.
Any help would be appreciated. Larry.

Hi Larry & welcome to AAPK.
Although the SX23 was listed in the 2003 catalog as well as 2004, they are pretty hard to find. I have the SX21 in my collection, but not a SX23. I have never seen a SX23 except those sold by Taylor………..Which are probably the same knives from the same production lines from which the Schrade knives came, or would have come, (I will explain that remark).
The SX series was an experiment that Schrade tried in Chinese made knives. This was an obvious attempt by Schrade to offer a decent quality knife at a low enough price to compete with the other Chinese knives that were flooding the market at that point in time. Unfortunately, I think it was too little, too late.
Both the SX23 and the SX20 are patterns that have eluded me in my attempts to collect all knives in this series. The SX20 appears in the 2003 catalog but not in the 2004 catalog. It is a 7 1/2 inch skinning pattern with a partially serrated blade. My hypothesis is there was a production error or problem in the manufacture of this knife is why it was dropped from the 2004 catalog. I don't know that this knife ever actually made it into production, or if it did reach the production stage, I do not know that there were any imported.
The SX23 seems to have fared slightly better than the SX20. While I have not seen any of these from Schrade, I have seen these packaged with the Taylor Cutlery LLC name on them. I imagine this pattern also, for whatever reason, was held up in production. Schrade was obviously having cash flow problems in their last couple of years. Perhaps this in some way affected these two patterns. When Taylor Cutlery acquired the intellectual property of Schrade, the knives in the SX series were obviously part of the deal. It would be a simple matter for Taylor to go to China to the factory that produced these knives and buy them for sale here in the US. I think this is what happened with the SX23. For whatever reason, it seems that Schrade did not import the SX23 or if they did so it was in very limited quantities. Taylor Cutlery would have had a great advantage with this particular product, if my theory is correct. After they purchased the rights to Schrade, they needed only to go to Schrade's supplier in China and have them repackage knives with Taylor's label. I think in the case of the SX23, this is precisely what happened.
That being said, the SX23 does not appear often on eBay, or anywhere else I have seen even under the Taylor label. I have seen a few with Taylor's name on them right after Taylor started importing knives under the Schrade name. I don't recall seeing any of these in the last year. To the best of my knowledge the SX23 was only produced in China, not produced in Ireland. The only knife in this series that I have been able to confirm the manufacture of in Ireland is the SX4B, the 4 in. folder, non-serrated with blackened blade. Although I have this same knife in my collection made in China as well as Ireland.
Good luck in finding an SX23. If you find an extra one please let me know. I'm still looking for one myself.

Thank you for taking the time to post a reply to my question. I think that your theory
is correct. I had basically assumed that the SX23 was made by China and even possibly imported but never made it into distribution. Possibly when Taylor bought Schrade these knives were in the deal and all Taylor did was just package them in their boxes under their name. However, I have no idea whether Taylor got stock and the intellectual properties or just the intellectual properties alone. Of course, all mine is mere speculation.
I went ahead and bought the SX23 a few days ago on Ebay and the seller is shipping it Priority so I should get it in the next day or two. I have been watching them for some while and the going price is about $15.00-$20.00 plus some pretty hefty shipping. They are not selling for that price though. I actually saw one that sold for about $7.00 plus shipping.
I noticed that week after week one guy had several ( bdj_sharps) but was never able to sell one. I sent him an email and told him that if he could do it I would give him $12.00 total which would include shipping on Ebays BUY IT NOW...and he could ship at any rate he wanted. (The knife was originally about $14.95 plus $6.00 shipping) He responded and said he would take it and asked if I wanted the drop point as well as the clip point. I bought only the clip point at $12.00 w/free shipping. That's about the best I've seen. I believe he still has some more. He emailed me and said he was sending it Priority mail and for me to enjoy it.
I have the Ireland SX4B...and it's not a bad knife. I also have a couple of the APEX knives...AP35 and AP55 Ireland and they're not too bad either. Rigid (SMKW) has an exact duplicate of the AP35 because I have them both. I needed the SX23 to complete my display.
